Mu-so iRadio preset issue

Posted by: Ali B on 23 December 2014

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could shine some light on an issue with our mu-so. Once up and running I set two of the radio presets to BBC R6 and R1 and left the others as they were. All was fine for a day but we suffered some network issues and, when trying to resolve them, I did a factory reset just to check it wasn't mu-so that was playing up.

The bizarre thing is that now neither of those stations will play at all. All other BBC stations (and every other one I've tried) are fine, it's just the two I set as presets. When clicked on I get about a 10th of second on streaming and then it just cuts off and says service unavailable. I'll be logging it with support but realise the factory is shutting down over xmas and thought the forum might result in an answer.

Cheers.

Better to log a query with support as we're still here and will be trying to at least dip into emails etc over the holidays as if we don't it's nuts when we come back after the break.

If you add BBC Radio stations from the vTuner lists rather than from "Naim's Choice" then you should find they work for you - we're not sure why there is a problem adding the stations from Naims Choice and there shouldn't be (we have spoken with the Beeb about this and even they can't shed any light on it) - all they keep telling us is that they're in the middle of a changeover of their streaming services / servers / formats and that it should all settle down once they've finished.

I too can't get my BBC pre-sets to connect using my Mu-so. However, it has fewer connection or playback issues with Naim's own 320kb stream.

Setup

Using my mac in the same position as my Mu-so, I'm getting 62.Mbs internet connection via my wifi

ISP: Virgin media (latest super hub in modem mode)

Latest Apple Time capsule router (IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac2)

Mu-so in the same room as router with approx 4m distance

Presets that fail to connect

  • BBC Radio 4-128k AAC
  • BBC World Service
  • BBC Radio 6 Music
  • BBC Radio 3-320 AAC

General Mu-so wifi connection issues

Whilst writing this email my Mu-so disconnected from my wifi, which has happens randomly. I've no connection or speed issues with our iPhones, iPads or laptops, which aren't as close to the router as the Mu-so. It's very poor at maintaining a wifi connection. I've no practical way of providing a permanent wired connection to my Mu-so. I bought it specifically because it was a wifi enabled device.

Can anyone tell me if I need to return my Mu-so to the dealer, or can this problem be rectified?

Have you tried altering the channel in your virgin hub ? I have had similar problems with mine and altered the channel and it is a lot lot better ( as mentioned elsewhere on this forum on the topic "mu-so is dead" ).

Super, hope everything is in is in order with muso.

@Simon: first, when I had muso, it seemed very capable in wifi connection, so do not take it to your AD right away.  But it sucked in ethernet connection so this is why I temporarily used it on wireless but this is not we are not talking about I know.

If your TC is connected to main modem/router (better hardwired) you have to enslave it in range extension mode (bridged). New Dhcp lease might help too.

Agreed, I have exactly the same problem. The wifi connection is (seemingly) randomly unreliable. I have about 12-15 devices connected to by Draytek router at any one time and the Mu-so is the only one dropping a connection. I have to say it's a deal breaker for me as it requires manual intervention several times during an afternoon, just not acceptable for this calibre of device. Huge shame as it's otherwise faultless, but an ethernet connection is not viable thanks to house layout and a hifi system that sits silent is no use to anyone.

I still occasionally get the odd dropout and i've come to accept that ti's never going to be 100% perfect. Strangely enough mine works better on wi-fi than on ethernet connection, it drops out a lot more on the wired connection.

Thanks for all your replies and advice. I ended up completely factory resetting my Apple time capsule and Virgin hub. That has improved connectivity to AirPlay, but the radio connection is very unreliable.

It's weird that the 320 Naim radio channel connects and streams perfectly every time as does BBC world service, however BBC radio 4 (which is my favourite) fails to connect. I set radio 4 as a preset, but it never connects, however, when I originally connected through the Naim app there were no connectivity issues. It's clearly something to do with how the Naim system and specific radio steams interact.

My UQ2 (like Muso) works better on wireless than on hardwired connection for iRadio streaming too. I'll soon take it to dealer for firmware update. Following the update  I'll test both wifi and ethernet connection at dealer's.  I hope that'd probably say if there's a glitch with my home network or there is an issue with the unit. Will try to report back.
