Synology DSM 5.1 Media Server no gapless playback?

Posted by: gert on 23 December 2014

Hello,

my uniti does not play music gaplessly via the UPnP media server from a synology NAS (DSM 5.1). I have read that this is a bug in the media server with activated transcoding. So I tried to turn the transcoding off. But even with the regarding checkbox turned off the flac files are transcoded to wav!?

Is there a trick how to configure this correctly? Maybe I have to choose another upnp profile for the naim uniti? Currently it is configured as "standard" device.

thanks for any help

Gert

Don't know but am running MinimServer on Synology into NDS flawlessly.  Accurate, versatile, and fast compared to Naim server I was using previously.  Might want to give it a go. You can run both to compare.

Yes, I have installed minimserver, too. Unfortunately the new version 0.8.3 crashes here. Simon (the developer of minimserver) wants to fix this in the next release. Instead of downgrading to the last version I am waiting for the bugfix, as he fixes such bugs very quick normally (but ok, it is xmas). In the meantime I am using the original server that I usually need anyway for playing ogg files.

I found that another flac album is played as flac fine. I do not know why the other album (that I used for my gapless tests all the time) is still played as wav? Maybe one of the upnp components is caching something incorrectly?

Clearing the upnp cache in the naim app did help?! Now the problematic album plays as flac and gaplessly, too. I really would like to know the exact technical reason for this. Is the codec/format defined in the URL of the tracks somehow?

but ok. I am happy that it works now. (Playing a vinyl record or CD is simpler somehow )

Simon is cool. Just checked for an update of minimserver: Update 53 is released a few minutes ago. And it works

I run Synology Media Server 5.1  with .wav & it plays gapless perfectly.

I read a question on this forum a few months ago & I loaded a .flac version of an album to see what the problem was. The album had most all its tracks linked gapless & found it ran perfectly, it alos played gapless with straight .flac & transcoding .flac to .wav ....... it was DSM-5.0.

Looking deeper I found Synology forum reports indicating there used to be a problem with gapless generally with the older DSM-4 series, but although some of it was fixed,  it remained a problem with transcoding.   I am still not sure exactly what DSM rev number(s) that had the fix(s),  but I believe it was all fixed from DSM-5.0 onwards.

I've been using the Synology media server for some years now and never had problems with gapless playback which were related to the NAS.

And as far as I understand gapless playback is not a feature of the media server but of the renderer: the Uniti has to fetch the next track early enough while still playing the old one; the server has little influence on this.

Gapless has to be available with the renderer,  but it also is affected by various server hard/firm/software & file format.
