Spotify Snobbery
Posted by: realmadspur on 24 December 2014
I remember as a kid when I first got into music, listening to John Peel in bed on a clock radio. I would of given right arm to have a service like Spotify. Yet, people dismiss it as not being of the highest quality. Well, I've loved it, just finding that track I haven't heard in years is awesome, recommending something to someone and they can find it on Spotify is great. I have recently swapped to Tidal, but for the casual user, and searching for new music it's bloody brilliant. We're are very lucky to have these services, I just hope enough money goes to new artists. If it keeps people listening to music, long live Spotify!!
Services certainly have their place, for the reasons you mentioned.
But it's hardly "snobbery" to object to feeding a 5, or 10, or 20, or 50, or 100 thousand (you pick, Pounds Sterling or Dollars) with lossy source material.

I'd rather listen to spotify than dab radio any day of the week
You can't get 6 Music, 5 live or 4 Xtra on Spotify, but you can on DAB.
Spotify and Tidal seem fine services to me .... Plug Sonos in to DAC and rock on.
Alternatively Mac & DAC route seems to make any service I want available.
no idea why so many people want Naim to integrate everything in to its boxes when Naim is top class electronics company not a software house
I couldn't agree more Wat, I'd rather they spend their time doing what they do best than try to become another sonos
I’ve just had a play & I can get BBC 6 music, 5 live & 4 Xtra, what is more with Sonos plugged into the back of my Marantz SACD player, Spotify sounds pretty good to me.

Firstly...Merry Christmas Everyone! Logged in today, as that damn Turkey hasn't quite defrosted properly!!
iRadio...Thousands of channels of most genre, crystal clear, some in Hi-Res, many without news or adds!! Tidal looks interesting, but I will not pay £20 a month just to listen to it. If you could download and keep the music, then I'd probably change my opinion.
So if someone doesn't like or rate the same things you do it's snobbery?
On your part maybe.
Happy Xmas by the way - not sure it's snobbery if you prefer one service to another compared to someone else, it's depends what you are looking for. We have so many choices now compared to a few years back I think we are actually quite lucky.
Thinking back to my Dad's HiFi all he had was Lp, Tuner plus Tape Deck (Cd added later) - now you can have Lp, Cd, Tuner (Fm + Dab), Tape, Computer, Dacs, iPad/iPhone into Bluetooth plus Streamers for local content or Internet services (Spotify ect).
I think we are better off due to these choices on offer, it's down to what floats your boat!
Si.
We've never had so much choice in formats and delivery systems to enjoy and celebrate. When I read topic headings like this my imagination goes to a population of drones with no will or imagination. I hope such a day never comes in my lifetime.

I love Spotify, it's the only one I can stream with my internet connection speed. I've recently been using it with Amarra sQ, which makes a pretty good fist at improving its sound quality. Their playlists are good burbling away in the background and of course it's a great way of dipping into album recommendations before lashing out on the CD.
I'm sure Spotify will soon be offering CD quality anyway.

I really do hope so. Having updated now and using the free trial period I would happily use it beyond that if the SQ was up to it.

I've no choice, can't try Tidal nor Qobuz due to country restrictions unless I use a fake IP add.
Spotify is good enough to explore music I would have never consider to buy or even listen.
Now listening to one of the top lists through MAC/V1.
Regards.

Just taken out a £0.99p for 3 months subscription, listening to the new Pink Floyd album on their highest rate and it sounds very good. Just wanted to see what it offered and at £0.33p a month, well that's what you could call good value. Happy Xmas everyone PG

Have you tried Deezer? They claim to work in 180 countries. Good luck.

Spotify at £0.99p
PG, I agree The Endless River sounds good on Spotify.. Sounds awesome on Qobuz HiFi. Really grows on you the more you listen to it.
Sady Qobuz are not offering 99p for a 3 month trial, but I think for new subscribers they are offering a free 2 month trial. Deezer are offering in conjunction with Sonos a 12,month trial of their lossy streaming service. Competition hotting up in this space.

Consumer Electronics = software. It's 2015, folks!
I've had some of the best nights listening to music while on Youtube. Old concerts, TV clips, Old Grey Whistle Test. It's all there! The related links down the side are useful too.

Wow, the US is six days ahead of Europe. Has there been some shift in the space time continuum?

I agree, and if I look at the Sonos app clients, when you search for a track, album, artist etc it searches across all subscribed services and you take your pick based on version, resolution etc. This is how it should be, life is too short to be limited to one streaming service.. It should be about enjoying your music. I think Somos have it spot on, and I think their client was developed by the University of Cambridge for them .. And if so it shows.

UK Spotify.com, still available
So having Naim help me play alternative sources is excellent but I also agree it should be secondary in their priority.
That said I believe they have their streaming sorted to where the secondary priorities can be addressed.
BTW Meerkat I feel your pain wrt defrosting turkey. In the states Jenny-O has turkeys and turkey breasts in oven bags that you toss directly from the freezer into to oven. Cut six small slits and get started on your other tasks like stuffing and drinking.
