NAS Idea, Is it crazy?

Posted by: The Meerkat on 26 December 2014

Because of it's noisy fan, I moved my Qnap NAS out of the listening room to another location, which is about 10-12 metres away. This has created an additional problem, which I won't go into.

I have moved the NAS back into the listening room, but this time I have put it in one of those small plastic containers, with a lid. I then cut out and couple of holes directly in line with where the fan is positioned, allowing air to be drawn in. This reduced the fan noise by at least 70%. I then put a couple of towels over the plastic container, making sure not to cover the ventilation holes. The fan noise has virtually gone!...I'm now thinking of making, or obtaining a proper enclosure, made of much thicker, more dense material.

I know that some NAS owners put their NAS in a cabinet, or other piece of furniture.

The only drawback so far, is the system and HDD temperature is now rising...Has anyone attempted what I've done

Thanks

How much is the new cable?

I wouldn't buy the cable. Save the money, wait a bit, buy a new NAS and leave the old as backup.

The cable don't fix the source of the problem.

Meerkat, why did you settle for 3 different cable types, rather than the same at different lengths ?

Have you seen the price of a 12 metre Cinnamon?!

Twice the price of a QNAP TS-112P inc. HD.

How long are you going to keep this nonsense up for?

As long as you keep replying!

Just as I thought a couple of days ago. Time waster!

Am genuinely curious as to how people think these cables are improving the sound... Better data transfer? Reduction in digital noise cross-over in adjacent analogue cabling? Reducing transmission of digital noise between devices?

On the original topic, heat and vibration are the biggest enemies of hard drives. Anything that adds to either of those factors should be avoided long term.

I don't know if this will help but I had a noisy NAS, the fan noise just wouldn't quieten down even with it on sorbothane feet and placed on a dual layer neoprene mat, what finally worked was attaching sorbothane feet to the side and resting it on its side, no noise at all now.
