Thought I'd bricked my HDX

Posted by: sktn77a on 29 December 2014

Well, today I disobeyed my strictest rule - if it ain't broke, don't fix it!  I thought I'd update my HDX from v1.7a to v1.7b.  Downloaded the files, burned the ISO and loaded it into the HDX.  Everything went as per the instructions and I got to the "Updating system firmware - DON NOT TURN OFF" message.  Instructions said that this make take 20 min or so.  Well, two hours later, I began to get worried!  It clearly wasn't doing anything by that time.  So I called the new US distributor (Audio Plus) and asked for their sage counsel.  Eric told me that I should turn it off and back on again and, if the update hadn't taken, to repeat the process.  So with $8,000 of trepidation, I did as instructed.  At first I got a "Mismatched GUI" error followed by the normal boot.  But after powering down and rebooting a second time everything appeared normal.  I checked the firmware version and GUI versions and they had all updated, so everything appears OK.

So, just in case anyone else has a similar problem, all is not lost.  But I wouldn't do anything without checking with HQ (in the UK) or a technically competent distributor (outside the UK, if you have one) first!

Hm. Another reason for me to NOT upgrade my HDX. It's working fine so why should I need to upgrade. Glad it worked for you ... Eventually.

Happy to hear that your HDX is OK now. I've burned the disc with 1.7b software, but I think about updating next year...

I was attracted to this thread by the title which represents the panic I go through every time I try to install an update! Anyway, the Naim Audio website says this is what 1.7b offers:

  • Servers now use Musicbrainz for disc look up if AMG/ROVI unavailable
  • Security updates to the main operating system
  • Bug fix for internal UPnP server issue
  • Bug fix for vTuner outage issue – now checks alternate servers if primary is unavailable

So long as you're starting with v1.7a (which you are) it's quite a doddle. You also need to uninstall the DTC and install it's new version which will also be on the disk you burn.

I did it on my NS01 which is sort of half way between a UnitiServe and HDX, without the screen, so there's no feedback while you're doing it. But it worked.
