Unitiserve HDD no longer indexing ripped CD's

Posted by: John Willmott on 30 December 2014

I upgraded to 1.7b on the 11th December .. successfully.

We left town for Xmas and I shut the whole system down.  On return I powered the system up and ripped a CD I received as a pressie (Lydia Mordkovitch .. Shostokovitch .. Scottish National Orchestra) .. I followed the ripping process and it went flawlessly except the album does not show up in the database .. anywhere .. not under "Newest" and can't be found by any of the canned search criteria.  It has now been 3 hours since the rip and the CD is still a no show.  After an hour I rebooted the Unitiserve but the CD still hasn't appeared.

This is the first CD ripped since the upgrade .. the system is playing already ripped CD's fine, and toggling the ripper to play the new CD instead of ripping it works fine too.

I can see in "System Messages" using nServe (I'm a Mac user) where the ripping has taken place.

I'm at a loss .. everything seems to be functioning within acceptable parameters, there's plenty of space left on the HDD (over 1TB)  .. no error messages .. and yet the results of the CD ripping cannot be found.

Does anyone have any ideas as to where I might start to solve this ?  Thanks.

When you browse to the uServe's HDD using Finder, can you see it?

Posted on: 30 December 2014 by John Willmott

Nope .. conspicuous by its absence .. I actually hadn't thought of looking there for it .. great catch .. but no, I'm afraid not.

Hi,

Could it be that the database lookup in AMG turned up with a wrong selection (album)? So the new album is there, but with an album titel and artist name you would not expect...

Regards,

Michel

Michel:

I'm not sure what the outcome would be if those set of circumstances occurred, but in my case there's a System Message with the correct date and time saying:

Ripping album 'Lydia Mordkovitch / Shostakovich- Violin Concertos No. 1, Op. 99 & No. 2, Op. 129'

so one has to assume the DB lookup had occurred and the right metadata retrieved.  Thanks for the thought though.

John, I'm not sure what I'm missing . . . as it sure sounds like the folder should turn up on in your Store.

Do you have more than one Store?  Unlikely as you have the HDD uServe . . . Are you looking in the MQ folder with Finder on your Mac?

This is maybe my best guess:  I see it's a classical album you've ripped . . . maybe based on the meta data the uServe has put it in an already-existing 'artist' folder and you just haven't opened THAT folder to look for it.  I have no idea what the 'artist' would be for that album . . . but maybe it went 'there' and you just don't know where 'there' is?!?!

Believe me I often don't know where "there is"

BUT, having said that I think you may be on the right track (excuse the pun) .. to eliminate the actual/physical CD as being the problem, yesterday I deleted an album from the store (only the one store as you surmised) and re-ripped it .. it didn't turn up either, which led me to believe it was a systemic problem.

However, following on your idea, and at the same time sorting the store by "date modified" I actually found the 2nd CD I ripped, placed in a folder called "Various artists" .. no idea why considering the CD was by a single artist .. however, no sign of my classical CD, based on yesterday's date as being the rip date.

I do believe this now puts me in a more confused state than I was previously in.

John, your little excursion into your Store probably is pretty valuable.

It's hard to know whether the other cd ended up as 'various artists' due to a problem with the uServe or a problem with the online database not being correct.  Delete and re-rip a few different cd's . . . see if there is a pattern.

Finally, reach out to Phil Harris at Naim and make an appointment for him to remotely log into your uServe if things still aren't right.  It doesn't sound like "user error!"

Excellent advice .. which I shall follow .. thank you for taking time out to assist.  I really appreciate it.

Thanks.  John.

An update .. informational only.

I worked 40 years in IT before retiring .. so I know a bit about test plans, logic, root cause etc., etc .. one of the greatest bitter sweet pills to swallow was the "It's working now" response after working on a problem and not consciously coming up with an actual solution to the problem.

That's what happened here .. I executed a test plan with projected results .. and lo, and dang behold, Lydia turned up with no explanation why .. it took around 15 minutes for her to turn up in the "Newest" category, but she's there .. alive and well.

I wish I could say what the problem was .. but ..

Again, thanks for your support.

John.

John, glad to hear things seem to be sorted out.  I know the feeling -- don't get me started on my journey figuring out how to get backups configured from my uServe to my nas!!  Once it 'just started working' I left well-enough alone!

(Also informational as to my backup woes -- the Naim servers are a bit picky as to how folders and files are named.  A blank space in the name of a backup folder on my nas did not please the uServe.  That was my issue, and my friend in town here who has 30 years in with Lotus, IBM and Microsoft presented that issue to me when I was showing him nServe.  He pointed out right away that a space might not be favored. He was quite right.)

Must have been dumb luck but configuring my backups from the Userve to my Netgear ReadyNas 102 went without a hitch and have been working every night since April when I brought it on-line.  What I have been unable to accomplish is to configure a backup from my NAS to an off-line storage device.  Just something else on the list to keep me away from my chores around the house .. Happy Listening.

John, for nas to attached USB drive, I use the Synology backup software built-in to Synology DiskStation.

Another choice is Carbon Copy Cloner for OS X; a great program, but much slower to backup if one has to route the files thru the Mac.  Better to let the nas do its own thing.
