Naim Lossless Streaming Roadmap Campaign

Posted by: GraemeH on 31 December 2014

OK, we're loyal. We have been with you a long time Naim.

Lot's of separate threads are now asking for clarity regarding the way forward for Naim and lossless streaming.

Please give us an indication of your future intentions so that we can make informed decisions about where to spend our hard earned income.

Thanks,

Graeme

Phil, my exact timing was blurry, but I did buy my Hugo in or around May I seem to remember and I was auditioning one of the first of the 'second gen' Hugo's , and at the time I felt there minimum reviews in the hifi mags and so I felt there wasn't huge amount to base your decision on other than your ears.. Which is the correct thing to do of course.

Certainly comments of Hugo on the forum were I seem to remember few and far between. There was of course Graeme's thread where I and other wrote our feedback, and at that time it felt others were also discovering what it could do, and it felt the hype was building And the magazine reviews started appearing .. And as such perhaps some antagonisms as well.

Graeme's thread was deleted, I need to see if it's been restored.

Yes, Graeme's  thread (NDX and  Chord Hugo) has been reinstated, thanks Richard. Yes it appears I mentioned I was auditioning the Hugo in May, and my write up appears towards the of end May In this thread.

Wow. Just...wow. That's the first time I've read that. That's truly worthy of the old days. Mana anyone?

One thing is for sure. After the repair of the UnitiServe it runs way cooler than before. Basically tepid. Pretty cool that on the NDX the Naim App allows the digital inputs to be named...no pun intended. If Sonos sounds this good via the NDX native Deezer and the others should be very satisfying.

Question for GraemeH and Simon. What is your set up to rip CD files and how are you storing, serving and backing up those and downloaded files so the NDX can process properly via UpnP? Experimenting..when I take the US out of the system it loses the nice structure and wondering how the presentation is less US. I mainly control with the new Naim App. Lastly, for Simon...are you still having issues with NDX 4.1 update. I'm planning to update the demo NDX for my dealer while I have it but may not if there are systemic issues.

I have a PC and use DBPoweramp software to rip FLAC lossless. I keep a copy on the PC, transfer a further copy to a 'MyBook Live' 3tb NAS and then a further back-up to an external hard drive.

I also keep all the CD's I copy.

The NDX is hard wired to the network via Cat6 cable.

All works seamlessly (including after 4.1 update).

Hi, yes there is still the issue with 4.1, but the workaround is easy enough to deal with.

My UPnP is Asset running on a Raspberry Pi with SMB disk mounts on a Netgear NAS.

Ripping I do with my Windows PC running dbpoweramp. It simply rips onto my NAS into the correct directories, and Asset automatically picks it up (every hour) and scans into its database.

With HD downloads, again I simply download the album and expand it into my NAS music directory.. these days most of my downloads are from Qobuz as I have found the quality more consistent and the price often attractive.

All in all very straightforward.

Help! I'm into the update and getting this message...

Failed to discover the produc on the network. Please check all connections and under the products Setup>Factory Settings>System Status>IP. Check that it has an IP address.

If it does then type in the address below and click Retry.

Where do I find this?

Posted on: 18 January 2015 by hungryhalibut

You can find it via the naim app, or via the front panel menu.

Posted on: 18 January 2015 by mackb3

Naim App locked with no access. No front panel buttons responding.

Mackb3, have you got a wired connection, ie not relying on wifi for the update? If not redo the upgrade with wired connection. I have been here before in the early days.. All came good in the end. (Good old layer 2 discovery protocols again)

Yes all wired. Followed the instructions to the T. If I abort will I be able to start over. I emailed Phil Harris but it's getting on in the evening in the UK so may have to wait till AM here unless I can abort then retry.

Posted on: 18 January 2015 by Simon-in-Suffolk

Tricky one.. I did abort and start over and it worked for me... (I was kind of bricking it at the time).. But of course there is  no guarantee  it will restart for you ... So perhaps best talking to Naim support if you need that certainty.

Simon

Really no choice at this point as everything is locked up. Will abort and try again.

Posted on: 18 January 2015 by hungryhalibut

Once you've aborted the process, make a note of the IP address before you start again.

Your last sentence gave me a bloody good laugh Simon. Excellent!

I'll go 'streaming' when you move in next door to me.

John.

Will do. Might be that this NDX is a version behind.

Posted on: 18 January 2015 by mackb3

Whew! Two more attempts and it took. Let's see how it works.

Posted on: 18 January 2015 by mackb3

OK sports fans. How to get Spotify Connect going?

I can't tell a lie, it has  been. I have truthfully have had less trouble streaming than I have had playing CDs with skipping CDs and slipping pucks... But perhaps I am just blessed, and perhaps a little expierienced.. I starting streaming in the late 90s.

...last one...Sonos/Deezer lossless into NDAC (optical. thanks Simon) easily outperforms Spotify Connect via updated NDX to NDAC.

Simon, Sonos/Deezer sounded better into NDAC directly rather than NDX to NDAC to my ears. But holy crap direct from USB stick either NDX or SU impressive. Better CAT6a certified on the way.

Mackb3, I am with you.. Albeit I use a Hugo rather than Naim DAC now. I feel although not certain, this wasn't always the case and I do wonder if there is something not quite right with the digital out / digital in with the 4.1 firmware...
