20 Feet From Stardom

Posted by: fred simon on 01 January 2015

Wow, what an incredible way to start off the new year: I might be the last person to have seen it, but I just watched 20 Feet From Stardom ... OMG, WTF, LHM! I can't even begin to compile sufficient superlatives for this film, one of the greatest, deepest, most moving films I've ever seen. Man, just the scene alone of Merry Clayton hearing her isolated vocal from Gimme Shelter ... the hairs on my neck will never lie back down! And her version of Neil Young's Southern Man? I never even knew that existed ... JHC! And Darlene Love, Lisa Fischer, Claudia Lennear ... wow!

Anyone who hasn't seen it yet, do yourself a huge favor and see it ASAP. I just might have to watch it every day!

Thanks for that. You're not the last person as I had never heard of it! I will be watching on Netflix later today

Yep it's a great documentary. Think I might have to revisit it Fred, thanks for the heads up!

I posted on another thread about this, but we watched it last night and loved it. Just fabulous.

Hi Fred, You will hear Gimme Shelter differently from now on I'm sure. We saw the stones in November

and kept listening towards Lisa. The best watch of 14 for me and TGW.

1+++  I had not listened to Lisa Fischer in a long time, had completly forgotten her!   I bought her album and I listen for her on all of her recordings.  What a remarkable voice!  That goes for all the ladies.

Thanks for this - just listening to the soundtrack on the much maligned Spotify Premium and it's very moving to hear the backing singers contributions isolated from the well-known tracks, and how good they were.

Which album of Lisa's do you recommend, Anthony? I'm definitely gonna pick up Merry Clayton's album with Southern Man on it.

If you can still get them, I have Merry's self titled album, Gimme Shelter and Keep Your Eye on the Sparrow. All three are excellent and well worth tracking down.

You won't be disappointed!

Watched this last night.  Very enjoyable.  Thanks for posting the tip, Fred.

The story of Merry Clayton's performance on Gimme Shelter is so memorable: She was called in the middle of the night to come down to the studio, which she does in hair-curlers, silk pajamas, and a mink coat ... and pregnant! That's the condition that yielded the hair-raising solo spot that is forever riveting.

I just watched 20 Feet From Stardom on DVD. My wife saw it in the theatre when it came out. She is a professional singer, mostly classical, but she has done background vocals, for among others, Andy Summers and Danny Elfman. We have friends who have done backup singing for Sting and for the Rolling Stones. So the movie hits a little close to home.

On a lighter note, I have some cool signed albums!

That's one movie I wanted to see in the theaters and was too busy or distracted.  I'll get it tho.

Mudwolf:

Take the time. It's a fantastic film. To make up for not seeing it in the theater, the DVD has some good out takes which are well worth watching.

enjoy.

Hmm. This has motivated me to buy the Blue ray (curiously it is cheaper than the DVD)
