NDX and UPnP

Posted by: Dave The Bass on 02 January 2015

I've got my new NDX up and running and all seemed well, but...tracks are being displayed in alphabetical order and I don't see all artists and albums unless I go through folders.  I am newbie so may have missed something simple but would appreciate some pointers.

My music is on a Lenovo desktop running Windows 8.1 and, as far as I know, have not installed a UPnP server. Do I need to, and if so do you have any recommendations? Cheers. D

Although you can use the built-in Windows UPnP functions via Media Player, to get the best out of it, you should use a third-party UPnP application. I never actually had problems with how the tracks were displayed or the order on when using the buit-in UPnP functionality but it will be important to use a server that allows you to turn off transcoding. With something of the level of the NDX it is important to give it an unadultered stream which most UPnP servers do not.

For your current dilema, if you simply put audio files in a directory and set it to share it on the network as music, you will get the files in alphabetical order (which you could manually fix by prepending a track number to the file names like "01. <MY TRACK NAME>.wav".

I'm always a little suprised that most Naim dealers don't ask these questions about where your music is stored and how you get it (ripping CDs or downloading) and get you all setup with the best option.  As I decided to build my own UPnP server on a Linux box, I can't offer any advice on which solution is best for Windows. There are a number of threads in the forum though with recommendations.

Dave, what you see is entirely down to what the UPnP / DLNA server presents to the Naim app.

if using a PC try using Asset UPnP/DLNA server, it works well with Naim.

Asset also supports the reading and sending of many file formats, and can support transcoding on the fly if for example you want to ensure the NDX only receives WAV irrespective of the format of your media. Some say, including the Naim MD, that Naim sounds best this way.

Thanks both. I think I'll try Asset and see how it goes. Cheers!

I loaded Asset and it does the business.  Thanks!

One more question if I may: I added a new album - in a new subdirectory - and the only was I could make it visible was to restart Asset. I had expected that one of the Rescan Library buttons would have taken care of that but didn't.

Any ideas?

Of the various servers I use (Twonkey, Asset, Logitech and MinimServer), I like Asset the most ... re: menu, sorting, handling, etc. ... but:

I've had to disable the NAS version as the latter often overloads re: RAM causing the music to stop.  I thought I had a suitable NAS (QNAP 419PII) but - according to the response I received to a query I posted on the Asset forum - its 512mb RAM is too little to handle the quantity of tracks I want to stream (now 47,200+).

The other servers work, though can be slow to assess the library, etc., and so I make the point, if you have a large-ish library you may need to consider your PC's brainpower.

Note that the PC version of Asset is available but it is not as menu friendly as the NAS version and it has the inherent problem of being PC based.

Good luck!

Mitch

In the config settings there should be an option to set the interval between automatic rescans (in minutes). You could try reducing this interval. I have mine set to 60 minutes. I'm not sure you can get Asset to immediately pick up new folder as soon as it's been created.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions guys. Much appreciated.

Btw Simon-in-Suffolk, I did set up Asset to transcode to WAV as you suggested and it does seem to sharpen up some my old MP3 rips. Thanks for the tip!
