Metadata edits not 'sticking' with uServe

Posted by: Bart on 04 January 2015

This is a new-to-me phenomenon.  Some of my manual metadata edits on cd's I'm ripping are being undone by the uServe about 15 seconds after I save them.

One of my R.E.M. rips gets the artist picked up as R.E.M  -- no . after the M.  If I try to add the dot so that I don't end up with an R.E.M. artist and an R.E.M artist, well, it reverts to R.E.M  Anyone else experiencing such, or have any ideas?

I am using nServe for OS X to do the edits on cd's I've ripped in the uServe.

When I try the edit in nServe for iOS, it returns an error "Could not rename artist"

I've had the same problem with a few albums. I also have one album to which I had to add artwork, and I can now see the album cover in n-serve, but not on the Naim app.

Bart - this is because you are ripping to FLAC. The Serve actually rips to WAV, then converts to FLAC. While it is in the encode queue you cannot edit the metadata, other than genre. Rip the CD and if you find you need to change anything, leave it 10 or 15 minutes and the changes can be made.

Thanks Nigel -- but I'm experiencing a different issue.  I've tried to edit 'too soon' after ripping, and seen the message that I cannot edit while it's still being encoded (other than genre as you noted).  The edit I tried (on the R.E.M. Murmer MFSL cd) is a cd that's been on my server for months.  I appreciate the thought!

The uServe definitely is not comfortable with the addition of a . period.  I've tried to put a . in the name of other artists, and it gets rejected, while the uServe is OK with other changes to the artist's name.

Can you do me a favor and try to add a . at the end of the name of an artist on a cd you've ripped, and see what happens??

Hi Bart, I've tried adding a . in nServe To my albums (at the end of the album title) ripped on the U.S. before as a way of differentiating between CD and Hi Res etc, but it wouldn't have it.

I tried changing ABC to ABC. and it won't have any of it! I've also checked my REM albums and they are all stored under R.E.M

I think you will have to put up with it. I wonder how the Serve would handle The Mighty Wah! The exclamation mark might cause meltdown.

Thanks guys!  So that my head doesn't explode, I will change the artist name on my HDTracks R.E.M. stuff to R.E.M

I also had to settle with R.E.M (without the final full stop), although if you are adding HD music manually to the UServe, then the final full stop is allowed.
