AirPort Extreme Time Capsule UPnP

Posted by: Splat on 04 January 2015

After migrating from Cyrus to Uniti2 feeding PMC Twenty.23s I'm really pleased with the sound from CD and high quality streaming radio. However, I was hoping to use my AirPort Extreme Time Capsule as UPnP server - it is a very good wifi router although in this case I am using a wired link into the Uniti2 for reliability. I had seen some info on difficulties with this although my dealer said he had a couple of customers who did this, but has since confirmed he has no details of how this is done.

I cannot see how to get UPnP software onto the 2TB internal disc which already has a lot of FLAC files loaded on it, to then get it recognised as a server. One alternative would be to use an external USB hard disc fed into the Time Capsule or into the USB port of the Uniti2, but neither of these seems to work either. Any advice gratefully received - would rather avoid having to put in a separate NAS drive if I can avoid it!

It doesn't. You'd need an extra machine to run a UpnP server on. I use a small laptop with Asset that gets its data from a QNAP NAS but also some specific music from the Apple Airport Extreme.

Thanks Iver. Hmm, OK tried the different tack using the front USB port (HDD or USB memory stick) and neither was recognised - is this a configuration issue or is that perhaps limited to a stream such as from iPod (which of course cannot use FLAC files...)?

The latter Splat. Do you have an iMac or Apple laptop ? You can run MinimServer on it. The iMac/Powrrbook than picks up the flacs from the Airport Exteme

You cannot install, configure and execute software – UPnP or otherwise – on an Airport Extreme. You'll need a real NAS or a computer to do that.

NAS on wired network is what you need, use the TM for what it's good at, automatic backup.

Thanks Iver and RaceTripper. NAS is on the shopping list but meanwhile I've trialled a copy of Asset UPnP on MacBook Air running the tracks off the FLAC files on the Timecapsule. Stunning sound now pouring out of the Twenty.23s with subtlety, detail, imagery, body and extraordinary base.

You can put music files onto a usb stick and insert it into the Uniti2 as well, the stick just has to be formatted right. FAT32 / Master Boot Record
