Oppo BDP-105D Processor?
Posted by: Southweststokie on 05 January 2015
I want to update my surround sound amp. However I have an Oppo 105D BluRay player which has 7.1 analogue RCA type outputs on the back. It also has speaker adjustment settings in the software for setting up the system similar to the facilities provided by my surround amp. With that in mind, do I really need another surround sound amplifier or could I just connect the analogue outputs from the Oppo to three mono power amplifiers to drive the centre and left/right rear surround channels with the two front left / right channels being connected to my Naim 252 / 300 via the AV input. Is this workable or am I missing something?
Comments appreciated,
Ken
Yes. I think you can do that, Ken. no additional surround sound power amp needed. I had an 103D on trial at home last summer together with three NAP100s, one using only one channel to drive the centre speaker. The Oppo acts as processor and pre-amp. Good it was, too. I didn't go for that combination as I elected to get my faulty n-Vi repaired instead. But when my n-Vi eventually dies I'd be happy with an Oppo 103D/105D into power amp solution.
I should think with your splendid 252/300 combo driving the front right and left speakers you would want a Naim amp solution for the centre and rears. Depending on what centre speaker you have, you might be able to bi-amp it with stereo Naim power amp.
Yes you can. I have a 105D with 252/300 for front left and right, 145 for the centre and 155 for rear left and right. Naim will make up the necessary cables and no surround amp needed. Works very well, particularly if you spend a bit of time setting the Oppo up and use a sound pressure meter. In fact, I think the Oppo is better than the AV2 that it replaced.
Yes this is very well possible. Nowadays one doesn't need an AV receiver anymore in combination with of course a capable audio system which is taking care of front and subwoofer, while you still would need a small amplification for the rear.
if I would have to do it again I wouldn't have an AV anymore.
MDS, Jonathan, Bert,
Thanks for your guidance, I shall follow this up.

If my AV2 ever fails, I'm planning to replace it with the Oppo mentioned here. I'm running a 252/300/145/200 so it's good to hear that it'll control the amps without any problems and even improve on the AV2 performanc. I'm guessing the only thing I'd miss is the way the AV2 integrates with the 252 & rest of the Naim kit.

Or you could use a NAP 145, like me ...
Yes Ken,
Per all the comments above, this is perfectly feasible. I run a 105 direct into a 5 channel power amp with no issues whatsoever. The only thing the Oppo really lacks is microphone-assisted set up, but ears work just as well imo ;-) And it's actually far more straight forward to set up & operate than most AVRs I've encountered.....
Amp wise I'd have thought a 145/155 combo would be about optimal in your system, but at a pinch a pair of 100's would do it. You could even use 1 of them to bi-amp the center speaker (with a Y interconnect), to give a bit more grunt.
Rackkit, Dungassin, Karlos,
Thanks for your comments, I shall be considering the power amp options

Ken.
I was really surprised at the upgrade my NAP200 made on the rears (n-Sata) over a previous NAP150. It really helped fill out the rear soundstage and also brought it forward towards the fronts (SL2 & Axent centre), to really envelope you in the sound. If my experience is anything to go by, don't skim on the rear amps.
Cheers,
Rack.
To re-iterate John above:
I too replaced my AV2 with the 105D. The works direct into my EAR534 for main and two NAP250s for centre and rear - works brilliantly; AV2 gone, not forgotten, but also NOT missed.

Dumb question allert….
When using the oppo 105D this way...
What is the playback audio quality?
Is it down sampled? or because its analog out… this is a non issue?
I am hoping to follow in the 105 D path so I can enjoy concerts video WITH the hi res audio through my active system...
Thanks Guys...
I'm hoping my AV2 lasts long enough for Oppo to eventually release a 4k Blu-Ray machine. Not sure streaming 4k services will be able to deliver hi def full surround sound as well UHD pictures without some kind of compression.

I have an 83SE, but I'm sure the same will apply to the 105's analogue outs. That's the whole point of the analogue outs - the Bluray player does the decoding and then sends the signal to your AV amp analogue inputs. That's why I do it this way, so that I get lossless output from the bluray into the AV2 analogue inputs.
So the answers to your questions are :
No downsampling unless you've specified that in the bluray player settings.
You're using analogue out from the bluray player, so the point is a non-issue.
Thanks Dungassin...
So a concert blue ray disk is going to be as good or better than CD's (Unitity Serve Ripped CD's) playing through my system?
Hmm. The replacement bluray disc of X-men Last Stand loads (slowly) and plays, but keeps freezing. So I either have a faulty disc (disc surface seems free from blemishes), the Oppo Firmware is still not adequate, or the Oppo itself is developing a fault. .... sigh ....
I have emailed Oppo to see if they have a solution. If not, back the disc goes - this time for a refund.
p.s. Before anyone suggests it - I have repeated the firmware upgrade and checked the version numbers. I have also emptied the Persistent Storage via Oppo Device Setup.
@ Dungassin. If its just 1 disc (which seems to be the case) I doubt its a player fault. However it is possible there's some new fangled coding in that disc which the firmware still doesn't yet cater for. Oppo ought to be able to advise.
Other avenues might be to try and test it on another player (eg a friend's), or even try ripping it and if that works then stream it to the Oppo or play it off a USB device. Failing all of that, send the disk back for a replacement.
@ Audioneophyte, in theory you will get better quality from the blu-ray disk as it is significantly higher res than red book CD. However there's theory and practice ;-) A thread has been raging elsewhere on this board about whether hi-res delivers any audible benefits at all. I'm in the camp that where the source is recorded & mixed at comparable levels, then it does. Which would be most modern movies/concerts.
Offsetting that is the argument that your streamer (or US if you use it as a player) may simply be better quality than the Oppo, and able to extract that much more from redbook that it's much the same as blu-ray in the end. Only trying it out will answer that question.
One thing guaranteed you won't get from a US or Naim streamer is 5.1 audio, should you have the amp/speakers to deliver it....
Downsampling *will* occur on any Blu-ray player where secondary audio effects are enabled... the audio mixer usually works only at 48KHz.
So if you want the full hi-def audio, make sure your player has no secondary audio, special features (for PiP etc) enabled. This applies to both analogue and digital outputs, the latter if bitstream is not used.
On the Oppo's, from the setup screen, Audio Format Setup -> Secondary Audio -> Off
Re : Bluray disc of X-men Days Of Future Past (sorry, I put Last Stand in earlier post by mistake! )
Oppo (USA website - apparently my player is USA model, even though purchase in the UK) told me how to dismantle the 83SE and give it a good clean. Bit of a faff, but I did it successfully. Didn't cure the problem. Tried the disc in SWMBO's Panasonic Bluray player. Intermittent freezing in that one as well.
Done some on-line research, and I'm not unique in having problems with this disc. I'm returning it for a refund, and will think long and hard before purchasing any other bluray made by 20th Century Fox, since they seem to have gone in for Draconian DRM management. I have no intention of buying a new player just for their future output. Surely DRM is to prevent copying? Why do they have to use a DRM which won't even let you play it unless you have a NEW bluray player or the latest firmware? Not everyone is computer literate and knows how to update firmware (e.g. SWMBO). Is this just a case of FORCED obsolescence?
Incidentally, Fox seem to have decided that the trailers on their bluray discs (they call them previews, and they run automatically before the Top Menu appears) will not be skippable by pressing the Menu Button or Skip Track. The only way to get past them quickly is to use the Fast Forward button. VERY annoying. I noticed this earlier on Fox's Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes (which, incidentally, plays without any problems!)

I've played this very same disc in a an old Denon DVD 3800BD player that's only profile 1.1 without any problems at all. Very strange that the Oppo running the latest firmware is having issues....

This sort of thing is very annoying. I was given a tip that with Oppos if you press the yellow button on the remote it skips these 'mandatory' trailers. Worth a try.

MDS : Tried the yellow button. Didn't work, I'm afraid.
As regards the X Men disc, I've decided it must be faulty and not due to the new DRM as the Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes bluray is an even more recent issue but plays perfectly well.
I intend to spend the rest of te evening trying out the new Blackstar Fly-3 guitar amp which I received FOC this morning. Sounds excellent, BTW.

Sorry to hear that. I've found it works on some discs, typically DVDs, but not all.
Follow up question:
Oppo 105D
Is it able to stream archived dvd's and/or blue rays from a NAS drive?
Thanks...
Not sure if this the right answer but having just ordered a Zen+ 6TB media server as my NAS i was told to order a Dune 303d as well in order to get my Oppo 105D to play the blurays from the NAS. Obviuosly i think the answer to your question depends on your NAS and the server software you are running on it. Sorry if this is not helpful.
Having investigated a little further and plugged my Voyager air (1TB portable wifi hard drive NAS) into my switch there was no problem playing a variety of DVDs or Blurays (MKV, MP4, M4A and AVIs) on the Oppo but the folder structure was not particularly pretty. I have also found out that 3D blu rays wouldnt necessarily stream. The Dune solution would solve this issue and provide a much better interface (important perhaps for SWMBO!)
