I question what the responsible civilized majority of the Islamic world have to say about this & WHEN we will hear & see something tangible to stop these sons of satan.

The question was already asked and remained unanswered since 911.

Just back from Trafalgar Square. Good to see so many turning out in peaceful defiance and solidarity, despite the cold and rain.

The perpetrators are utter degenerates, beyond scum. They, their poisonous ideology, their supporters and those who shelter them must be destroyed. And their apologists and appeasers should hang their heads in utter shame.

It goes back far beyond that Haim. It dates back to the 1980s, and the Afghan-Soviet war, and the Rushdie affair. The signs were all there, but the security services here and in the US were more concerned with the supposed threat from communists and left-wingers (and in the UK, Irish republicanism) than with the existential threat posed by extremist Islam.

Our very way of life is under threat, just as it was in 1940.

..... Which makes it more than time now that the civilized and descent people for once raise there voices saying we can simply not accept these acts of crualty !

I hope the wait for the Islamic World to condemn such actions is successful. We have been waiting for about fifteen years so far [since 9/11].

It took the Christian World centuries to work out that Crusades were not good.

I suspect that we do not have that much time to sort this one out.

If this is not worked out peacefully and soon, then the number of Islamic people in the old World of Europe will guarantee that the Irish problem in the UK will be viewed as a relative storm in a tea-cup.

Right wing politics will become mainstream ... And a perfect storm will ensue.

Thousands out in force in Paris:

Moi aussi.

There is little Islamic countries can do except withdraw funding to well known fundamentalist organisations. Even so, there is no real mechanism to identify actual or potential killers.

I believe its a lot more closer to the modern day,  the scum that are responsible for this & the other so called islamist (small "i") atrocities we have in the recent past are living in in a post 9/11 ideology of "western hate".  It is not Islam, it's a whole new ideology & is as far from religion as nazism was from Christianity.

Long live  freedom of speech ! Je Suis Charlie !!! Has anyone out there watched any of the late  Christopher Hitchen's brilliant lectures and debates on the insidious and extreme dangers of  religious extremism  that is slowly encroaching on the core values of freedom in western society ? His was a brave voice against religious tyranny . I wish he was still with us. Much of lectures and debates are readily  available on YouTube . All lovers of freedom expression should heed Hitchen's warnings of not standing up to these bullies.  The pulitzer prize winning book - The Looming Tower is a must read for those interested and understanding the rise of radical Islam.

In a curious way this mirrors the issue about N Korea and the 'Interview' film. Attempting to supress freedom of speech.

We should not forget that parody/satire have an important role. I don't believe anyone should set out to be deliberately offensive-but offence is more often taken than given and those unable to accept satire, parody and humour should first look at themselves. Charlie Hebdo appears to have been an equal opportunities satirist-offending all around. I hope that principle continues.

The rise of extreme Islam preceded 9/11 but accelerated thereafter. Bush/Blair should ask about the success or otherwise of their 'war on terror'.

Sadly it is moderate Islam that has most to lose-by polarising views against the faith as a whole, yet it seems unable as a group to challenge these schismatics/fanatics.

Dec.2014 France votes to recognise Palestine. Israel is furious.

Jan.2015 Unidentified gunmen shoot innocent civilians and are alleged to have shouted pro-Islamic fundamentalist slogans.

Minutes later people on internet forums express their outrage and talk about Muslim extremism before any Muslim has been convicted, tried or even arrested.

It is all so tediously predictable.

So the gunmen were Protestants??

Oh no. They're only the cream of the sewer where politicians worldwide usually go fishing.

Seems like they are 'identified' and they are Muslim however.

I'm not sure I understand the above post - it probably makes sense to the poster...

As far as France is concerned, one has to go back to the 50s and 60s to find the source of the problems we are facing now. Bush and Blair's lies only compounded the issue.

I remember the time when the first immigrants arrived from North Africa: they were the "bicots", the "bougnouls" (both extremely offensive words) - yet they worked hard, they didn't pinch anyone's jobs as France's economy was growing fast after the war.

When they demonstrated in Paris on October 17, 1961 against the curfew which was imposed on them, dozens of them were thrown into the Seine by the police - nobody knows how many - yet the French government still won't recognise its responsibility, the Paris Police Prefect was promoted at the time. Prominent public personalities were involved, they have never been prosecuted. That is just one example.

I remember the "ratonnades" (wanton attacks on North Africans, the "rats") - we're paying for that today. The young generations are angry, they turn to crime, they listen to the most violent among them.

They commit the atrocities which we saw yesterday. It's not a question of "civilisation vs barbarism" - as some posters suggested above - it's just that when you treat people like dirt, then you must expect them to react one day, you can't expect them to be polite and quiet for ever. And I'm not excusing those two criminals, they are scum; I was on the Place de la Republique in Lille with thousands of other people last night.

Apparently one of the suspects left his ID papers in the getaway car.

Indeed - very strange.

And a police woman was shot dead this morning in the southern suburbs of Paris.

Le Monde covers the events live.

According to the conspiracy theorists here, they were Mossad agents. Working in cahoots with the CIA of course.

In the event your distasteful and imbecilic conspiracy theory is proved correct, I will of course make a full and public apology to you... but in the meantime, you really are talking out of your arse.
