Upgrade time.

Posted by: Kane on 08 January 2015

I am thinking about upgrading to a Nait XS2,ND5XS or a Superuniti. At the moment my system is Naimuniti, Stageline, Gyrodec, SME 309, Linn Klyde, B&W CM7. Has anyone made this step up and is there anything else i should put on my demo list ?

I tried theses and really like the XS and ND5XS, but went for a NACN172XS and NAP155 (since changed to NAP200 as a part ex). I also auditioned a Linn Majik. For me the SuperUniti was good but the other combos better. So would suggest auditioning the 172 it is quite underrated.

Your choice may be as much about logistics as absolute sound quality. Before I bought my SU I tried a Uniti 2. I thought the SU was miles better, so I bought it. The other option was the Nd5 and Nait XS. This offers slightly better absolute quality but I knew I'd end up with a power supply for both and did not want to go there. Bear in mind that the SU cannot power a stage line, so you'd need a flatcap or a different, powered, phono stage.

Thank you both for your reply. I hear you Hungryhalibut about the power supply.Hi  PG is the NACN172XS is in the boat as the Surperuniti you can not use a stageline without a power supply of some sort ?

The 172 will not power a stageline. The ND5 and XS2 are a great combo, I much prefer the XS2 ofver the one for it's timing. I always found the XS1 didn't really grab me as much.

You also have the advantage of being able to add an XP5 and a Flatcap if you want to in future.

And of course Powerlines and a Hiline...

Hi Kane,

I went from an original Uniti to a Superuniti, and it really is a big step up, one which I really enjoyed.

I think HH has hit the nail on the head though: depends on where you see yourself headed with your system in the coming years.

If you want to reduce box count and have a simple solution with great sound, SU is definitely the way to go, job done and sorted, no more tinkering once the Powerline / upgraded ethernet cables are in place.

But if you see your future with multiple boxes, upgrade possibilities and maybe some tinkering, the other route is for you.

Its worth thinking and demoing carefully first though to make sure it is the right choice for you, whichever you decide.

I went from a SuperUniti to a UnitiQute2, and that was also a big step up in sound quality!!

I went for the Superuniti, as I didn't find the ND5/NaitXS all that much better. But then, I didn't already own a Stageline so I went for a Rega Fono instead. If I ever move on from the SU, I don't see it being a single box as a problem, I prefer to just sell it and start again. I'm afraid the 172 didn't do it for me at all.

I like my 172 very much. I demo'd it with the NAP100 (that I own) and thought it equal to, but different from, the Uniti. With a NAP200 (to come eventually) I thought it was very close to being as good as a SU. In the end I went for separate boxes so I could upgrade a step at a time. I also use a Rega phono stage that has its own power. I recommend you put the 172 and either NAP155sx or 200 on your shortlist.

I will try and book a demo for this Saturday. Thanks for all of yor suggestions.

If you like to stick to two boxes maximum, indeed as you suggested the ND5XS streamer with NAITXS2 is a perfect starting point.

But if you have a somewhat larger living room or you are in need of more power, you may consider the 172 with NAP200 or NAP250. I compared Superuniti, 172+200 and 172+250. The latter combination was the clear winner for me, and I'm a happy Naimer since.

Have fun at your demo tomorrow and let us know the verdict!

I did the same and totally agree. Before the Uniti I had a multi box sustem which I don't miss in the slightest. Very happy with my SU.

You all make very good cases, my demo is booked and I will report my findings back to you all.

Once you've picked a favourite see if you can borrow it for a few days. It's more relaxing at home.

Back from the demo the Superuniti is a great bit of kit but the Nait XS & ND5XS is a lot better.

I have just listened to a Supernait which had a Unitiserve as it's front end this sounded much better than the XS combo. Has anyone used this set up ?

Posted on: 12 January 2015 by ChrisSU

Are you talking about an old style Supernait with DAC built in, or are you still using the ND5?

Posted on: 12 January 2015 by Kane
It's the old Supernait with the DAC.
Posted on: 13 January 2015 by ChrisSU

If you don't need a streamer, I'd go with the Unitiserve>Supernait. It will power your Stageline, and you still get iRadio from the Unitiserve.

My problem is I went to a demo of the Superuniti Vs a Nait XS2 and ND5XS and I like the former more, but my dealer has a 2012 Supernait and can afford a NDX or Unitiserve.
Posted on: 13 January 2015 by ChrisSU

If you liked the Supernait, I'd still be tempted to go for it, it's the best amp on your shortlist, as you've discovered from your dem. If you can afford to keep the Uniti as well, that could continue work as a streamer for the time being, as could a Unitiqute, maybe? It all depends where you want to end up.

If you have looked at a SuperUniti then Devialet's 120 and 200 are worth a listen. I prefered the 120 to the SuperUniti by some margin, particularly with a pair of speakers which are supported by their active speaker matching technology. I understand that they also have a built in phono stage, but you'd need check that out.

The recently announced Dialog; Sonos style, streamer with its own mesh network should provide private and public network streaming. When I looked at Devialet this was the missing part. Customer deliveries start at the end of the month, so it won't be too long before we will have some idea of how capable it will be. It's got a quad core processor, 1GB of RAM and 2GB of flash storage, so it should have enought hardware horse power and upgrade potential. But as we all know software is often the more challenging part.

I ended up with a NAP 100 / DAC-V1 on an interim basis. Over the next 18 months or so I'll keep an eye on how both products develop, because I want a 'One' box solution.

Just back from my demo. I've got myself a Supernait 1 and a Unitiserve plus a 3rd party power supply for the Unitiserve. This system is so good I've listen to the Superuniti and a Nait XS and ND5XS and they do not come close. This set up was not to far away from the NDX and Supernait 2 that I listen to last year.

Good choice, hope you enjoy it!
