Coaxial Digital Switch Box

Posted by: Dungassin on 08 January 2015

Posting this here, as I'm not sure how many still look at the Home Theatre Forum, and it is at least vaguely streaming related.

I've been sorting out my AV system, and have decided that I am fed up of plugging and unplugging some of my coaxial digital audio leads due to only having 2 coax digital inputs on the AV2.  Looked on-line and can't find a simple box which does this switching, other than one by Bandridge which will also change between optical and digital, but needs to be plugged into the mains.  So my question is ...

Could I just use an RCA phono switching box such as the one made by B-Tech, but only use one of the stereo channels?  Or would this pose serious problems with impedance matching etc?  I have already decided that a splitter type cable is not a good idea as it risks having 2 devices feeding signal to one input at the same time.

Not really needing high quality audio here, just a couple of Freeview PVRs/DVD recorders.   I will keep one of the Naim AV2 inputs dedicated to my Oppo.

I can't answer specifically your question but had a similar problem with a lack of inouts on my NDX.

I resolved this by using the digital output on my TV instead which works well. The TV outputs what is being watched.

This may be a solution for you?

I've tried that in the past, but it gives me a loud mains hum, so I assume that there is an earthing problem with that method.

On the US Amazon site, there is a switch made by Panlong that seems to be what you're looking for.  I think.  It does require external power however.

True, there is one on the US Amazon site - alas only for 2 devices, but I've looked on UK Amazon, and there is no Panlong switch for Coax digital audio via that site, although there are ones for optical toslink and HDMI.  All seem to require mains power.

I don't see why a switch for RCA connections can't just be passive.  After all, it works perfectly well with an RCA coaxial digital lead plugged into a short female to male RCA connector (my father kindly made one up for me a couple of years before his death).  I did at one time use a non-powered optical digital switch (too many games machines!) which worked flawlessly, BTW.

If I do have to use a powered RCA coax dig audio switch box, I have been offered a Bandridge one on loan from my younger son-in-law to see if it works for me.

There's a thread on HfiCorner in which Foottapper recommends a filter (?) to cure the earth problem from the TV - very cheaply.

Could you not use the toslink (optical) inputs on the AV2 - use Coax-Toslink converters if need be. It'll mean a couple of little boxes and wall warts, but more elegant than a switching or unplugging cables.

Gavin : I vaguely remember that thread.  I'll perhaps have a search for it later

James : The optical inputs are already both in use, and I already have a switch box for use on one of those! (games machines).  Did a quick count of how many sockets I have behind the AV system in my study (I dislike trailing multi sockets, so got an electrician to put me the extra sockets in).  I count 16!  I have another 8 behind my computer desk just to make it even worse.  If we ever move I may have to have some of them removed for saleability (is that a word?).   Would you believe that all 16 of those sockets are in use?.   I keep track of my cables and other connections by labelling them (the Brother label printer is a godsend - I must remember to reclaim it from my younger son-in-law)

Just had to climb in the loft to find a powered HDMI switch box (in my bits box), because I have inherited a Sagem PVR from SWMBO, because she was constantly complaining about it pixellating - I think probably because it has a rather insensitive tuner.  She has a new YouView box as of today (birthday present for her).  Alas, the Sagem doesn't put out enough power to drive the passive Duronic HDMI switch I had been using (Now have 4 HDMI devices and only 2 HDMI inputs on the TV).  While I was up there I found an RCA phono switching box I'd forgotten about.  It dates from when I had a Nait1 (when they first came out) and I needed the extra input(s).  I'll give that a whirl, and if it works OK, problem solved.  If not, I've been doing more 'interweb' research, and BNC switching boxes are available, so perhaps one of those and a few BNC/Phono adapters would do the job.

Wow - that's some setup. I know better understand your dilemma - or get another AV2 and switch between them using the preamp

If you check my profile, you'll get some idea of how many bits of equipment are involved in my study AV system.  I should probably update the profile, but can't be bothered ATM.  The 552 and NDS are part of the setup in that room.  With this sort of setup an all-in-one remote is (I use a Harmony) is IMO an essential just to avoid the tearing out of my hair.

I take my guitars (and amp/pedals etc) and Roland keyboard in there to practice occasionally (playing along to backing tracks on the 552 etc).  Well, I am retired and have to amuse myself 'somehow'

Have tried my old RCA phono switching box (using right channel only inputs/outputs.  All seems to work OK, so problem now probably moot.

Thanks but my old RCA phono switch box is doing the job perfectly well.
