UPnP Server help please

Posted by: AS332 on 08 January 2015

I have an Ex Dem Unity Qute 2 at home on trial .

I have updated the software to 4.1 , got everything working , including Spotify !

Using a Qnap NAS for my music library ,  I started with Twonky , which is fine but the artwork is very low res on the Naim app .

When I tried Plex , I found it much better but experienced a problem with one of my shares .

I have three shares  , one is downloaded Flac Hi-Res , the second is tracks downloaded from the iTunes store and the third share is all my CD's ripped to Apple lossless via XLD .

The final lossless share is the one I cannot get to play in Plex  . Do they not support Apple Lossless ?

All worked fine in Twonky .

Thank you for any help . My first experience with UPnP servers !

Just to update on my previous posts ,

After working in France last week I returned to find a new QNAP 269L waiting for me plus a 2Gb Ram SODIMM to upgrade it to 3Gb.

I updated the firmware and left it overnight to transfer all my albums from the Mac.

I activated Minimserver and everything worked perfectly with only a few tweaks with Metadatics to sort out the odd AlbumArt and tags . I'm even using Plex to stream movies to my TV from the QNAP !

Suffice to say the Unity Qute2 is no longer on trial , it's mine !

1+ for the combination MinimServer with Synology. As others have noted, the setup is slightly more than plug n play but definitely worth the extra few mouse clicks.

I endured more than enjoyed Synology's own Audio Station: flaky performance, worked ok replaying flac files that I'd ripped from my own CD library, but staunchly refused to play hi-res flac files that I'd purchased online. And editing the metadata tags usually resulted in an error message.

I love AssetPnP but, regrettably, there is still no version for Synology, a shame since I like the flexibility and preset options of the browsing tree on Asset. I miss the ability to group by the first alphanumeric character in other products. Maybe it is possible to create a tag for this in MimimServer but I haven't discovered it yet.

Happy browsing and listening...

Please have a look here: http://minimserver.com/ug-brow...habetical%20grouping

There you can read how to get alphanumeric groups for minimserver. Btw the manuel to minimserver is very good. Everything possible is described there with examples.

I agree that MinimServer works well on Synology, but have not had problems really with Synology's own UPnP server, which is called Media Server, not Audio Station.  Audio Station has a bunch of other functionality which I've not used. Media Server (at least as of a few months ago) is happy with hi-res files and with transcoding flac to wav.  But given the choice, yes I'd install the free MinimServer (and donate to the developer; nothing is truly free).

+1 Bart - Synology's Media Server is rock solid & apart from not handling art in its album listings (a bonus IMO) it is very hard to understand what other media servers have that Synology don't.

The Synology Media Server has very limited options for browsing the music catalogue, nothing like the sophistication and options offered by MinimServer. That's what prompted me to switch.

Thanks for the link Reinibert! I agree, the documentation is excellent.

I find it hard to understand why you think that Andrew,  I have 14 browse categories; folder, album, artist, genre & combinations of all those & more.  I have yet to use - or maybe better say never had need - to use them all.

Minimserver (MS) vs Synology-UPnP-Server (SU):

MS:

- delivers cover art faster

- delivers cover art for the folder of an album (e.g. when browsing by folder).

- delivers cover art always in high resolution

- is able to transcode most music formats to e.g. WAV24 (SU is able to transcode to WAV as well with some tricks. You will not get it to transcode mp3 AFAIK. Also gapless playback is broken with transcoding enabled since DSM5 at least in my case.)

- offers UPnP-search functionality. (You will not miss it if you only use the naim-App as it does not use this unfortunately. The naim-app only does filtering on the currently displayed list. BubbleUPnP is much better regarding this, it also offers random tracks from the whole library by using UPnP search).

- can be configured in more detail regaring browsing categories. But I am not using this yet.

SU:

- is always found by the UPnP control point. (MS sometimes takes very long to show up after waking up my DS213+)

- always lists the latest added tracks automatically. (MS must be triggered to rescan the lib manually. This is not a big thing for me, because this works fast and can be triggered by BubbleUPnP.)

This are the differences that come to my mind without thinking deeper. Since MS is indexing ogg/vorbis files since some days, I am not using SU anymore.
