Spiral (Engrenages)

New series of the brilliant Paris-set French cop show, starting tonight on BBC4 at 9pm. One the advantages of being utterly skint in January is that one has the perfect excuse not to go out on a Saturday night and stay in and watch quality subtitled TV instead.

Fantastic!

Looking forward to this.

Looking forward to this as it's not a series we've got into yet.

Watch it G and you'll be hooked! The characters are compelling, the writing and acting are superb and the series makes Paris look like the most unromantic place on earth!

Watched the first 2 episodes quite compelling. Shame we missed the previous 4 series.

Previous series were also very compelling - see if you can get hold of them.  I also think having to focus on subtitles (English speaker only) concentrates the mind and really draws you in.  Gives the Scandinavians a run for their money.  Not yet seen tonight's new offering, but planning a cosy night in on Sunday to do so.

Enjoy.

You can get them all on DVD or on Netflix quite cheaply Howard - well worth catching up with all of them.

Enjoy.

I agree Tommay - and the opening twofer gives you plenty to chew on - utterly superb. And because this is - despite the thrilling police procedural stuff - primarily a character-driven drama, it feel great to have the gang back again: heroic Laure, newly-sensible Gilou, hard-pressed Tin Tin, Josephine, Pierre Clement, wily Judge Roban, the villainous Marchad, weary Marianne...

There's one really clever and witty bit of plotting as well... see if you spot it.

Finding stuff we have missed is reasonably easy, main problem is finding time to watch them!

Wheat from chaff though isn't it?

That's why personal recs are so useful.

Totally agree!  Make time for the best and steer clear of all the dross...

Great start!

Only saw the last series but the characters are excellent.

All finely balanced ready for next week.

Interested to know from any French Forumites if 'Engranages' is a high profile series in France?

Eg. prime time viewing on one of the main channels?

I think it is Chris. But apparently its most devoted following is here in the UK - so says Caroline Proust (Laure) in this week's Radio Times...

According to Canal+'s press office it's been sold to 72 countries, making it one of France's biggest-ever TV exports.

Thanks Kevin.

Ill be able to chat about it to my French work colleagues at our next meet up opportunity now I know!

I praise BBC Four for showing quality international subtitled Dramas/Thrillers from Europe.  Its about time we got some variation instead of being fed the usual British and US dramas.

Love it. Excellent gritty drama. Nice to have something actually worth watching on a Saturday evening.

An oasis of intelligence amidst a sea of prime-time dross.

It is on primetime TV here, but on Canal+, which is a pay channel. I haven't ever watched it, but might give it a go given the good feedback on here.

It's terrific, thanks for the recommendation Kevin.

I just binge-watched the first three after a week away from home.

Santé!

Maitre Karlsson!

If the crooks made off on a Tractor with 100 kilo of huitres only then would France watch. We've watched every episode (4th series was a bit duff comparatively) and can recommend them. Unfortunately having lived here in France for a year, we have met no-one who will admit to seeing it, or "The Returned" either.

Im not going to spoil it for those that haven't yet seen last night's episodes, but

Man with gun, what an incompetent? Sad....

There is the sense of some really good twists and turns coming over the next weeks.

Continues to be a most excellent watch.

It's good stuff. Shocking ending to episode 6 though..

And what's the deal with Roban's nose bleeds, I wonder..?

He actually collapsed after the nose bleed in the toilet. Everything that happened after that was all a bad dream.

10/10! My knowledge of "vernacular" or "idiomatic" French must be better than I thought!
