What was the last concert you went in 2015?

Posted by: kuma on 11 January 2015

My first concert for 2015 started with youthful pairing of Paul Lewis/Vasily Petrenko at the Orchestra Hall last night.

Petrenko opened with Elgar's 'In the South' Overture and I was pleasantly surprised how lively and energetically it was played. Even the CSO musicians seemed more upbeat and animated than usual. I throughly enjoyed Petrenko's refreshing take on this tune.

Lewis has been a *regular* at the CSO for a few years. His Emperor Concerto is heroic, bold and confident as I expected him to be. The only draw back I felt was the orchestra was a bit soft and not as rhythmic feeling they were trailing a tad behind Lewis. A bit of a surprise really after such a lively Elgar piece.

Lewis did not offer his own cadenza in the Emperor but he played Schubert's Allegretto in C Minor as an encore. The trouble was he was still on the Beethoven mode. ( I love his Beethoven but not totally sold on his Schubert work )

Symphonic Dances was exciting Petrenko keeping the CSO on their toes. Perhaps it did not have the menacing weight of Berliner/Rattle set but the CSO Brass rose to the occasion adding an extra brilliance.

And it was cool that noone coughed after the final gong and kept the silence for a pretty good duration.

It was the pee break for them and us! Still smiling from ear to ear.

Richard Thompson Electric Trio, Ipswich Regent last night. The fella's put on a bit of weight since last I saw him but still superb; great musicians all. The support were The Rails, Richard's daughter and her hubby James Walbourne, a very good folk duo.

Given Richard's huge output it's difficult to satisfy everyone but he did a pretty good job selecting what to play. I'm smitten with his new album so I'm very familiar with the tunes from it. Excellent!

Tony,

Saw them last Thursday at Sheffield City Hall.  I agree with your comments. On the strength of the Rails performance I bought the "Fair Weather" cd and James Walbourne's "The Hill" cd.

James is an excellent guitarist. I have to say I was more impressed with their live performance than the cd's.

Oh. I also ordered "Fair Weather" Graham. Lots of good reviews on Amazon but quite pricey I thought.

Saw him last Saturday in Nottingham and yes he does appear to be a bit weighty around the middle. I've never seen a duff Thompson concert in over 35 years and his recorded music is always brilliant as is the new album, do you have the 2 cd version?

You were lucky with the Rails as support, in Nottingham the support was Johnny Borrell, ex Razorlight I think who was not suitable I feel, the Rails were I think elsewhere although they seem to be the support on all other of the gigs.

We saw RT on Sunday 20th Royal Festival Hall , Rails as support. I did comment about Richards expanding middle and was told "you can talk".

As usual another superb performance by all 3 of them so tight, drummer is mesmerizing has "low" kit and plays with hands, feet, sticks, brushes ends of sticks.

A good 2 hour ish set even a cover of Hey Joe.

One little criticism it was just a shade too load, so not all the vocals got through.

In Nottingham the last encore was "Take a Heart" by I think the Sorrows, I'm sure last time he was in Nottingham - 2013 -  he did Hey Joe.

I agree about the load, a bit more subtlety and acoustic guitar would have been nice, but hey it was the Electric Trio.

Posted on: 22 September 2015 by BigH47

That should read " a shade too LOUD" not load.

He did Take A Heart as an encore too. It is a Sorrows cover.

Steven Wilson in Cremona last night. Really good as usually and the icing on the cake... Dark Matter one of my fave songs and never thought I'd get to hear live. Happy as a bunny!

Posted on: 23 September 2015 by Kevin-W

Crosby, Stills & Nash at the Brighton Centre - front row (just by Stills)!

OK, I wasn't looking forward to this, as "Our House" and "Marrakech Express" are barf-inducing crap, and "Teach Your Children" and "Almost Cut My Hair' represent hippie sanctimoniousness at its very worst, but on the whole this was a good gig. The Cros was in very fine voice, and Stills is a monster guitar player. I particularly enjoyed "Wooden Ships", "Deja Vu" and "Long Time Gone".

Setlist:

Last night at the Bedford in beautiful Balham, Niall Kelly and his band. Originally from Derry, now resident in Tooting, he's a bit of a ledge with the SW12/17 massive. Lovely bloke too. His music is not groundbreaking but he writes good songs and is a fine singer.

There's a stream to last night's gig here. Niall and band are on 1 hour 42 mins in.

The Big G at the RAH last night. Great show, much tighter than the recent Brighton warm-up but ruined by two turds who kept trying to film it with their iPads. Oh, the perils of modern gig-going!

Nicola Benedetti at the Bridgewater Hall Manchester on the Tuesday the 22nd.

Italy and the Four Seasons Tour Leonard Elschenbroich cello

Tchaikovsky Souvenir de Florence

Mark-Anthony Turnage New work for violin and cello

Vivaldi Four Seasons

Sublime.

Gilmour (again) at the RAH, last night. No iPad filmers this time round. Disappointingly the setlist was the same, and no Crosby and Nash as there was on Wednesday night.

But DG played fantastically well, stretching out his solos on "The Blue" and "Money", and adding much more power to "Astronomy Domine", "Today" and "Sorrow".

The playing on "The Blue" and "A Boat Lies Waiting" was absolutely sublime.

+1. This ruins most concerts for me these days. Glowing screens continously distracting in the foreground. And if people insist on video, can they at least turn their F%$#*&g phones sideways! The utter stupidity of vertical video shooters is as least as annoying as the videoing itself.

In Vancouver. Great concert. One of the best I've seen this year. Perhaps the best.

The Tubes at the Clapham Grand, a trip down memory lane having seen them in the early 80's. A much stripped down show, but a great couple of hours

Posted on: 28 September 2015 by Nigel 66

Martin Stephenson & the Daintees in Hall Two at the Sage, Gateshead on Saturday night. A small room (300-ish people?).

Good stories, good songs and a great band.

Only spoiled by watching the England rugby game when I got home !

25th September, Los Endos a superb Genesis tribute band, they now seem to be expanding their sets to include some PC era stuff.

Next year they are touring the whole '76 tour set, the first with PC as the main singer.

Kraftwerk

Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium

A fun concert - the sound at the venue was great and 3D visuals were awesome.

I believe they will be putting out a Surround sound/ visual disc from the concert series in the near future.

25th Sept - Gilmour at the Albert Hall, with Denis A, Steve H, Adrian (Lontano) and Jane of this forum, plus Alan and Sally of Chord Cable Co.

No change in setlist from the previous two nights, no Crosby and Nash as there was on the Wednesday either, but probably of the three nights so far this was the best, with DG at the top ofhis game, with top-notch versions of "AD", "FOS", "OAI" and "Today". The excellent company and a nice dinner helped too.

Top marks to Denis for securing such good quality seats - row 19 in the Arena. An interesting experience being "underneath" the laser grid.
