Firmware Update and n-Stream

Posted by: Kevin Richardson on 12 January 2015

I have a NDX and would like to know if the new firmware [4.1 i think] will still work with the old n-Stream iPhone app. [I really dislike the new app]   Also....  How does the Spotify integration work?  Is Naim's solution any different than my current iPad--> AirportExpress-->NDX via optical connection?

Any insight greatly appreciated.

Hi Kevin...

Yes it does.

[Me too !]

Nicely, but you have to sign up to the premium Spotify service.

Vastly different !  Naim's solution runs on the streamer itself, using your i-device as a 'controller' rather than the actual source, so the music comes from the Spotify server direct to your NDX, not via your i-device. "Clever" I thought (but I'm easily impressed   )

I was surprised how usable the feature actually is - I've only ever 'dabbled' with Spotify & similar services before, but now this looks like a great way to discover new music, worth the £9.99 / month price tag.

All should work fine. Not sure how N-stream will respond to Spotify. You don't need N-stream to control Spotify, so perhaps not a big deal, but you might not get the Spotify information through the N-stream app for example - not sure. Anyway, like I say, probably not a huge deal and it's a good idea to do the upgrade anyway.

While I understand that not everyone likes the new app, it's worth trying the latest build. It's very much improved from v1.0 and personally I'm very happy with it. The interface is Spotify-ish and very smart, and it does some things the old one didn't. Personally, I wouldn't go back.

It will all work together perfectly well, barring a few functions. For example, on the Naim app, after selecting Spotify as an input, you hit a button to launch the Spotify app, from which you then control everything. NStream doesn't have this button, so you just close the app and open Spotify, from which you select your NDX instead of local playback from the iPhone.

Sound quality isn't going to blow your socks off, but it's better than the Airport Expess/Optical route.
