n-stream volume control NAC 252 / NDS

Posted by: dave marshall on 14 January 2015

Hi,

I've just upgraded my iPad 1 to a new iPad Air, and, hence, am now able to use the latest version of n-Stream.

Anyone able to give me a quick pointer as to how to enable system automation to allow me to control volume settings via the iPad?

Cheers,

Dave.

Plug a 3.5mm cable into the remote out jack of the 252 and remote in jack of NDS.

Using the NDS front panel and remote control, go to Settings -> System Automation and tell it you have a preamp, and what input your NDS is connected to.

Enjoy!

You also need to enable 'show volume control' in the n-Stream app audio settings

Just need to get hold the the 3.5mm jack / phono cable.

The reverse is what's needed - NDS remote out to 252 remote in.

Whew.  I thought that was the case, but was waiting to post 'til I got home to verify.  The NDS is controlling the amp, so it's remote OUT from the NDS, to remote IN on the amp; that's the logic, anyways.

Thanks Guys,

Once I've picked up the required cable, all should be well.

Ta Dah!

System Automation up and running............many thanks chaps.

Have to say that I much prefer the interface on the current n-Stream to what I had previously.

Again, thanks for the assistance.

Hi Chaps,

I may well be back on here tomorrow, seeking help, as I plan to apply the software update to the NDS, AND introduce a new Qnap nas to the system.

Busy old day!

Dave,

The latest firmware update for the NDS forces a reset to factory settings so you will need to set up system automation again after doing the update.

Sure enough,

No issues introducing the new Qnap NAS.

When it came to the NDS software upgrade, however, though able to download and install the required driver, (reconfigures mini USB to comms port?), no workio!

I'm guessing that it's either because I'm on the newest OS, Yosemite, or maybe it's that I cannot configure my MacBook as per Naim instructions, i.e. there's no ethernet port on the machine........so last century!!!

Anyway, tomorrow I'll try again using an older MacBook, which does have an ethernet port, and runs on Mountain Lion.

If no luck, it's the Helpline for me!

It's been said before elsewhere, but if my smart TV and PVR can update themselves directly via t'internet, how come my Naim streamer can't?

The fun just never stops,

Dave.

Hi Dave,

Your Mac should have come with a usb-to-ethernet adaptor in the box.  If you want to do the NDS upgrade, you need both the usb connection to the NDS and the Mac needs to be on the home network with the NDS; you can use ethernet, or wifi.  I've done it both ways and both worked just fine for me.

No problems with Yosemite!  You install the port software per the instructions on the Naim sheet . . . then forget about the part about looking for it in the 'About My Mac' 'System Report.'  It will not appear there even though installed!  Just connect the Mac to the NDS, open the Naim Updater software, and in the pulldown list you'll see it.

I've upgraded my NDS and Qute numerous times with my Macbook running Yosemite; happy to walk you thru it.

Hi Bart,

Well, it seems ok for me to attempting this with the Macbook operating via wifi.

The driver doesn't appear in the dropdown list though, only "incoming bluetooth", so I'm surmising that I may have downloaded an incorrect driver from the various links given in Naim's PDF.

What's worse, since powering everything back up, the NDS is finding no UPnP server.

Getting fed up now, bring back CD's!

As I said earlier, which can't Naim's internet connected kit upgrade it's firmware directly from t'net?

Oh well, try again over the weekend,

Dave.

I have updated my Unitiqute and NDS recently and had problems with the port. I did choose the wrong link in the update sheet in lack of English understanding.

I use Yosemite so that cannot be the issue. Read the update sheet again and choose the correct link, I don't remember which one

After update you have to choose "audio settings" on the app, then "show audio settings".

Dave, the usb driver thing you want to download as mentioned in the software update instructions is:

When you download that and unzip it, it will put this file on your Mac (mine goes into the Downloads folder):

SiLabsUSBDriverDisk.dmg

Install that .dmg file.

Now, ignore what the Naim instructions say about:

To check to see if the Com ports are ready available, do the following;
Go to the top right and click on the APPLE logo and select
About This Mac. . . .

That simply isn't right; it doesn't appear in the About This Mac window in Yosemite anyway.  But it's been installed!

Then run the update software; you should see the usb port in the dropdown list in the NDS update software when you look in the list.

Let us know if you get this far!

Hi Bart,

Thanks for the assistance.

Here's where I'm at.

The driver already downloaded is in fact the same one referred to by the link you provided.

I'd unzipped it, and it does appear in my Applications folder.

However, once I open the Naim upgrade software, that driver doesn't appear in the drop down menu on the second page - the only one seen is "incoming bluetooth"

I mentioned above that the NDS is now not seeing any UPnP servers, in my case, an HDX, which was all functioning fine before I started this process.

Saying that, my MacBook, in finder, is no longer seeing either my NAS, nor the NDS, so something has gone seriously amiss.

Not sure why this would have happened, as I didn't get any further than the drop down menu, as above, so hadn't really initiated the upgrade process?

Will dig out the HDX manual, and try to work out what's going on.

The fun never stops!

Dave.

Hi Bart,

Well, progress today, in that I've sorted out the issue of the NDS not seeing any server.............normal service has been resumed, and the music is flowing once more.......Phew!

Still no further forward the the software upgrade though, as the required USB driver still refuses to appear in the drop down list in the Naim installer.

I've dropped Naim Support an email this evening, so hopefully that clever Phil Harris will come back with an answer.

In the meantime, just so happy to have the music back on again.

Cheers,

Dave.

Dave, after unzipping it, you have to run it to install it.  You've not installed it yet.

After unzipping it and double-clicking on the resulting .dmg file, you should see the Silicon Labs VCP Driver Installer appear as a disk image on your desktop.  Double click that, and run through the installation routine.  When that's over it'll actually be installed!

Then proceed to run the Naim updater . . .

Dave, FWIW I got an Apple USB to Ethernet RJ45 adapter for my MacBook Pro.. There are several times you need to use Ethernet, and this is usually one of them.. although you might be able to use wifi you are in the hands of your wifi access point and it's capabilities, I beleive because of this uncertainty Naim recommend wired Ethernet.

Hi Bart,

No luck so far, the file is definitely installed, yet resolutely refuses to appear in the drop down on the Naim updater...... bit of a mystery.

Phil Harris is on the case as we speak, so hopefully, I'll get this sorted within the next couple days.

Regards,

Dave.

Hi Bart,

Just to bring you up to date, it seems that my NDS will be returning to Salisbury in order to have a new digital board installed, which will address the "Error code 36" issue, and they'll carry out the software update at the same time.

Phew!

Dave.
