Is this comment a joke?

in my opinion compressed and lossless music files can sound equal maybe only if heard through a smartphone and a 10 € headphone !

MP3? Yes wins hands down, hard to believe but true !

'Not the Nine o'clock News' was one of my favourite comedy shows...

Sorry I'm not British and sometimes I have some troubles with your type of humor

I guarantee that you will never get it entirely.

Norwegian "hunor" is even drier ...

Not or perhaps not not ...

Humor and HIFI wise nobody can beat the Brits ! And I'm serious.

I pretty much agree on the MP3 winning.  It's only when listening to music it falls down a little.  That said, I primarily listen near blind, with my glasses on there is not much between any of them.

In a hyper detailed system, you might like the effect mp3 has. Get rid of all that extra detail and the music shines through.

Almost like flat earth.

Mp3 compression gets rid of all that hifi nonsense. The end result is musicality in spades.

Is there an mp3 version of this forum?  I'd like to try it.

I'd suggest that Rupert's post is forum MP3 exemplified.

If you value all the emotions & beauty of real music played thru the best replay systems, then MP3 is perfect for playing on someone else's in-ear iP / MP3 player.

Rupert you are giving bears a bad name!

Rather than Smith & Jones I'm reminded of the Fast Show "I was very, very.. drunk" sketches.

Hands-up those who think MP3 sounds better than FLAC or WAV?

Wow, what an unexpected post !

Well, i tend to think that if MP3 wins over the other formats (non destructive by the way), it "should" be a problem with your system or your room ... ?

As i've written above, MP3 is a destructive format and do NOT give you the entire musical message recorded. It brakes dynamic and "reduce the scene".
With such Naim material, without the idea to be elitist, you could consider to go for much less performing gears.
I've done the comparaison too and on my side, MP3 cannot compete, which is normal. Space argument is ridiculous considering the price of hard drives now.

Maybe you could continue your listening tests and change your mind ?

Anyway, i deeply respect you opinion, but i cannot hide my surprise.
Cheers.

I'd say he's trying to cover a little s n igg er at the OPs original comment!

I have a few VBR (ave. 260kbps) MP3 albums and they sound fine on a UnitiQute (as most things do!) but CD quality WAV or FLAC is better, I'd love MP3 to be as good as the downloads are cheaper and more easily available, unfortunately I can hear a difference, enough to stop me buying any more.

Well Rupert, I've held up from replying for 17 hours or so, but I really need to know:

Were you trying to wind us up?

I try and look in on him every so often to make sure there are plenty of baked beans in the cupboard.
