Grateful Dead

News today via their website that the 4 surviving members are getting together in July 2015 for 3 last concerts. Must be to do with the Martin Scorsese film to be made celebrating the 50th anniversary.

I love the Dead, but how can it be the Dead without Jerry? Would love to see a Scorsese film about them, though.

Wonder who will play the Jerry Garcia parts?   Big shoes to fill.

That'd be Trey Anastasio from Phish. (In fact, I'd be happy enough with three days of Phish at Soldier Field, to be honest....)

I have some time, but I have to decide if I want to go.  My wife has ZERO interest.  Maybe it's better just as a memory . . . .

(I've been to about 80 dead shows from 1979 to 1995.)

Am having those same thoughts.  Many of the shows I attended were in Chicago, so am glad that's where they will be playing. If they were returning to either the Auditorium or Uptown Theatres, I'd go.  But Soldier Field has no such appeal for me.

I'd definitely consider over paying for good seats at a smaller venue.  I'm guessing that on-field seats are general admission?  In my old age I have no patience for general admission, and I want to sit close enough to enjoy the show.

That's only 5 / year.  Maybe it's not QUITE that many, but I've lived on the east coast my whole life and they'd play here virtually every year in the spring, summer and fall.  Without traveling much at all I could easily see them 5 times per year   I was always afraid of missing something cool; I finally got to see a live Casey Jones at RFK Stadium in DC when I lived there.  They hadn't played it in 8 years before that.  Pretty fun!

I've only been to 17 shows, all in England, but if I can get tickets I'll be there every night!

I only ever saw the Dead once, at Wembley Arena in 1990 (fantastic gig, although Jerry's voice was a bit shot) - but I remember meeting some Deadheads there, one of whom had seen the band 660 times!

He also told me that he knew of a couple of people who'd been to more than 1,000 Dead shows over the previous 25 years...

I knew people who "toured" with the band (meaning they traveled from show to show all summer).  Despite being a 19, 20, 21-year old . . . that had NO interest to me.  The farthest I've driven to see them was probably 150 miles.  Once my ex and I did travel from the east coast to Phoenix AZ to see them, but it was just part of a mini vacation we put together that included seeing the Grand Canyon, etc.

The parking lot scene was fun to watch, but I never had any interest in days or weeks on the road for that.
