Mu-so as soundbar - temporary loss of sound
Posted by: Dune buggy on 26 January 2015
When watching TV, after an hour or so the mu-so suffers loss of sound with blinking white light for about 10 seconds, before reverting back to normal by itself. It's an optical connection from the Sony TV. Mu-so is also directly connected to my Apple timecapsule router.
Does anyone have any ideas?
I have an LG TV used the same way as yourself and every now and then the Muso disconnects from it, which is very annoying. I basically have to switch the Muso on and off again and then cycle through the various connect options via the remote control until the sound reappears. Happened again this morning not long after I switched both the TV and Muso on.

I'm not sure if I imagined it or not but is there some sort of energy saving setting you can disable which might be causing this?

My auto standby time is 4 hours
Does anyone have any ideas?

I'm glad I'm not the only one!
By the way I have always had auto-standby set to Never. I've toggled the "Stay Connected" setting but it doesn't seem to help.
Naim please give us a clue.
Hi Guys,
Firstly can I remind everyone that we really want people to contact *US* directly for support if you need it (as per the stickies at the top of the forums) ... we don't necessarily see every post that goes up here to be able to read it and see if it's someone asking for assistance...
Right ... so you're seeing the network LED flashing when the audio drops? Does this happen on a regular basis? (i.e. every hour / 4 hours / 8 hours / 24 hours?) Do you know what your DHCP lease time is on your router?
If the network LED is flashing (and it's a regularly spaced out occurrence) then my suspicion is that it could be that for some reason related to DHCP lease expiry and renewal so lets see if we can get more information and find out for sure.
Cheers
Phil

Hi Phil,
Sorry for for not going through official channels but was just replying to the post. I have my Muso in a shelf on a TV stand so am never aware of what happens when it disconnects from the TV Itself. As it is also usually when my wife is watching something, the only urgency is to get the sound back as she is not very understanding of this failing of the Muso. In my case it's not very often and generally switching it off via the remote, switching on again and cycling through the connection options gets the sound back. I can't see any of this on the Muso as it is hidden by the TV stand. It does not appear to be directly connected to auto standby setting unless I have left it on accidentally and the auto standby does not recognise that the Muso is being used. My WiFi is stable and I do not have this issue with other HiFi hardware. Does not appear to be an Issue when I am using it for music. Hope this helps

Hmm ... thanks for the information but it doesn't really tell me anything useful I'm afraid ... I could really do to know what the network indicator is doing at the time if that is possible...?
Cheers

Hi Phil,
Sorry from me as OP too Phil, now I know for the future.
Anyway thanks for replying. My DHCP lease is set for 1 day. I don't see any problems with various other networked equipment. So far I've only been aware of the sound dropping out in the evenings but that's when we use it mostly anyway.

Hi,
Does it drop out multiple times in the evening? What does the network indicator show when it drops out...?
Cheers
Phil
Just once per evening, far as I can remember.
Ermm if you mean the indicator light on the side, it blinks white for the 10 seconds or so that audio is dropped.

OK - so that sounds like the same DHCP lease renewal issue ...
Phil
I get exactly the same thing
Mine is a Sony TV too. Every now and then the sound drops out for about 10 secs, not a regular thing like every few hours as far as I know, but then we tend not to watch TV for hours at a time. It's not sound coming over network though, this is wired through optical link from TV to Mu-so. Will look out for network light next time...
I also get the Mu-so refuses to play Radio 2 from the presets thing...Has that been fixed yet?
If it's any help, mine is connected to a Panasonic TV and seems to be ok with no sound drop outs.
However, sometimes it would be appreciated.

It does only seem to occur with certain network / router combinations...
Phil
But it's not networked digits? Connected through optical cable...So does whatever it's doing just cock up the wired inputs for a while?
Is there a way to test if it is the DHCP lease renewal?

You could configure a short lease interval on your wireless router. Some routers will show the lease expiry time for each lease which would allow you to monitor when the mu-so has updated its lease.

Thanks, I'll give that a try

By the way I reduced the lease interval from 24h (default on my Airport Time Capsule) to 1h and that seems to have done the trick - no more dropouts. Thanks to everyone for their input, and to @roo for the tip.
The mu-so has definitely been a good purchase btw
The main issue with the MUSO is "made in China", i have already seen faulty ones appear on certain internet auction sites.
...and this is an issue because?

My iPhone is made in China. Seems to work fine. I suppose the Muso could be made in the UK and be double the price. Probably wouldn't sell too well though...

Rather an odd perspective to take ... there will be faulty products no matter where they are made.
'Made in China' doesn't mean low quality - anyone that has actually gone down this route to get something manufactured will confirm that you can (and we do) have product built to whatever standard you decide you want - if you want a quality product the it can be built to that quality.
What concerns me here is that if it is 'faulty' then it is still under warranty so why auction off a faulty product rather than getting it sorted under warranty?
