Music You Missed First Time Round?

Posted by: GraemeH on 01 February 2015

Which artists have you discovered later in life that you missed out of your library - when they were originally about and you were younger?

For me 'The Grateful Dead' are a relatively recent discovery I can't believe I missed until 50 last year!

Any others?

Cluster, Roedelius et al, despite their association with Eno (who I've always loved)

Dead Can Dance (grown into them, was never taken by them in the 80s)

The Beatles, never heard any of their LPs (my mum had Please Please Me and played it to death and put me right off them!) Just bought a couple of CDs (Revolver, Abbey Road) not bad!

There are innumerable jazz and classical musicians that I have discovered over recent years, but in a 'popular' vein Kraftwerk are the best example. I totally missed their Autobahn, Radioactivity, Man Machine and Computer World albums at the time, and only discovered much later how wonderful they are.

Funnily enough, I am just at this moment discovering (via Spotify) bassist Oscar Pettiford's albums: Specifically Modern Quintet (just ordered the Bethlehem Records 10" vinyl) and Nonet & Octet available on cd only at present. These are "must have" classics for jazz lovers IMHO. Give them a try.
