Vanishing albums ...

Posted by: Stephen Pritchard on 02 February 2015

I use three types of control points:

iPhone 6 - 16GB

iPod touch - recent version

iPad - 1st generation

I have an NDS and a few 'Qutes (bedrooms, kitchen and study).

On the iPhone I can't see all the albums on my NAS.  It happened overnight a couple of weeks ago.  I am up-to-date on firmware for all devices.

They are all there on the iPad, but again only some on the iPod touch

I have a QNAP 412 NAS running Twonky in advanced mode, but I prefer to search my music through my music folders (classical, contemporary, jazz, klezmer, spoken word, films,) rather than by artist or composer.  I also have Asset running on the NAS but only use for my classical music.

I have removed all redundant apps from my iPhone and iPod and most of my photos, but still can't navigate using my iPhone or iPod.  I have not added any new music to my collection since last year.

Does anyone have any ideas how to improve the situation?

Ditch Twonky and do it all on Asset.

Had thought about that - but can't see how to navigate my own folder structure using Asset.

Do you know how bart?

Asset is great go to in IPad App Advanced Search Folders & Filename Browsing works for me

OK thanks Xenasys.

Its a shame that Asset does not show album covers until you drill down unlike Twonky - but I can live with that.

You could try minimserver as an alternative. It displays album covers when listing the content of an artist folder, too.

Stephen, I am not using UPnP-based systems on a regular basis but when I want to test something that does not work as expected, I usually use minidlna. It is very easy to set up and you can browse your music collection through folders. On a Unix system there are 4 steps to do after installation:

1) setup the folders to be searched (usually in /etc/minidlna.conf)

2) stop the server (usually "sudo /etc/init.d/minidlna stop") if it is already running

3) rebuild the database ("sudo minidlna -R")

... wait for the database to be built

4) start the server (usually "sudo /etc/init.d/minidlna start")

Then connect with your clients and check. If everything works fine then you most probably have a problem with your server. Best, nbpf

+1 for minim. It is easy to install on a Qnap, it has a pretty good folder view and it is stable. Much better than twonkey. You can switch between folder view and tag view. It is made with classic in mind. So you can use it for all music, just put them in diffrent folders. I have a Qnap 412 running with two folders, one with music and one with radio plays. Quit comfortable to splitt this two kind of audio-data.

Minim lovers: I tried running Minim on my QNAP early last year but could not get the beast to do anything.  If there is a new version out there I'm willing to try again.

nbpf: not heard of minidlna so I'll do some research

The issue seems to be with my iPhone 6 just not allowing the Twonkey interface to search my folder structure - I can search by album fine.  Its just frustrating ...

for running minimserver on the qnap you need first install java. Both are to find under "all apps" on the administraor-site on your qnap. Most importent is to run java first and then install minim. If the music is under the folder multimedia minimserver will find the music-files. After a while minimserver has indexed the music and you can find them with the naim-app.

To control the minimserver you have to install minimwatch on your PC or Mac. For this read the manual on minimserver.com.

Thanks for everyone's contributions - lots to think about.

Last night I realised that I had not tried deleting and reinstalling the Naim app.  Now that this is done - the albums are back in play with Twonkey.

Again thanks for the ideas.

All's well that ends well. But this suggests that there is an error in the app's implementation or in iOS.
