fault 36 (again)
Posted by: DrPo on 05 February 2015
I have been away for a few days and had my NDX switched off. Now that I am back I cannot power the NDX up. It invariably comes with the "ERROR 36" message, i have had this several times in the past but it was always fixed by powering off, waiting about 10 seconds the powering on again. This time after 5 restarts it is not fixed. NDX is on latest firmware. ... Any ideas?
I had a fault 36 on a Superuniti that required a servicing to fix it. That said though, the fault didn't "brick" the unit... it just rendered the display and remote useless.... I could still control playback via n-stream.
I think now there is a software patch that can be sent so you can repair the fault yourself. Contact Naim customer service via the website and they should be able to help you.
Thanks , I will email Phil Harris. Its weird though as I would think any fix should have been part of the latest firmware
The 'fix' is a bit of software that is not part of the final release update package. I still have it in an email from Phil that I could forward to you if you'd like!

Many hanks Bart, I did get a patch today from Steven @ NAIM which I will try out once the work dy here in Europe is over, hope this does it :-)

I applied that patch before the latest update (4.1), and 4.1 did not over-write it, which I was happy about! It's apparently a unique DSP software that solves the Fault 36 issues. My NDS used to throw that fault every time it was power cycled (including during the update process itself) and now it has never happened.

Best it comes from Naim. What works for you, may not be appropriate elsewhere, depending on how up to date the various softwares are (or aren't).

Good point!

well i have the fix from Naim but no clue how to upload it :-) i was assuming it would be just another "firmware version" available in the streamer app but this is not the case. How do I implement it?
Phil's email to me with the file included the following helpful instructions. They SHOULD still be valid, but per Richard's note above, I cannot offer any warranty re the same
The basic process is to use the Naim Updater to update your NDX, but to first substitute, among the files that the updater wants to install, the DSP file Naim sent you for the DSP file in the updater package.
**Note: Phil sent this to me before 4.1 was released. Thus it references 3.22. Just ignore 3.22 and do what it says with 4.1 instead. That's what I did as by the time I got around to installing it, 4.1 had just been released. Also, I have an NDS; you'll want to substitute NDX for NDS. Meaning, you'll add the new DSP file into one of the NDX subfolders of the installer. (The installer software is very clever. It includes files for all the players, but knows what it's connected to. It'll know you're updating an NDX, so it will pull files from the NDX sub-folders.)

For Windows Only:
Firstly ensure you have the streamer updater software installed and working on your Windows PC.
Use “Windows Explorer” on Your Windows PC to browse to:
“c:\Program Files (or “Program Files (x86)” if you are on 64Bit Windows) \Naim\Streamer Updater\Firmware\NDS\3.22.0(7232) Western Europe\DSP”
(If your NDS is using a different firmware version than “Western Europe” then you should open that folder rather than the Western Europe folder.)
Delete the file in there called “NDS-DSP_V2p0p5.ldr” and copy the attached “NDX dsp 2.0.15.ldr” file into that now-empty folder.
You should now be able to run the updater again and it should install the new .ldr file into your NDS.
For OSX Only:
Firstly ensure you have the streamer updater software installed and working on your Mac.
Use “Finder” to open the applications folder, locate the “Naim Streamer Updater” application icon and right-click on it. Select “Show Package Contents” from the drop down menu.
Double-click the “Contents” folder,
Double-click the “Resources” folder,
Double-click the “Firmware” folder,
Double-click the “NDS” folder,
Double-click the “3.22.0(7232) Western Europe” folder (if your NDS is using a different firmware version than “Western Europe” then you should open that folder rather than the Western Europe folder),
Double-click the DSP folder,
Right-click the “NDS-DSP_V2p0p5.ldr” shortcut icon and select “Move to trash”
Copy the attached “NDX dsp 2.0.15.ldr” file into that now-empty folder.
You should now be able to run the updater again and it should install the new .ldr file into your NDS.

.
thanks Bart, in fact this seems to be the only logical way of doing it as i was just now looking at the files in the directory where the firmware sits and notixed in the DSP subfolder similar files with the "fix". As there are two NDX (1 and 2) folders and to be on safe side i will contact NAIM and ask for instructions. Again, thanks for the prompt responses!
