ARHGHHHH How to setup backup of my HDX Using Qnap TS210 NAS

Posted by: sprintgtvgus on 07 February 2015

So, I have been trying to set up a backup of my hdx using my NAS.

I have been playing around with the "backup station" of the QNap browser software, but to no avail.

Everything seems to be set up around me backing up the nas to an external location, not the other way round,

I have tried to setup backup jobs but they are all achieving the above.

I made a note of the HDX IP address etc.

Also read the QNAP online manual and Naim Knowledge base article!

I know this is really a pure IT question, but I thought I would ask as some may be using a QNAP to back up HDX or Unitiserve?

Any pointers much appreciated.

You need to setup the HDX to backup to the nas, not the other way around.  The nas will not 'pull' the files from the HDX; you want the HDX to 'push' them to the nas.

The HDX has a backup utility built in.  There are a few threads from a year (or 2 now?) ago discussing it in a bit of detail -- look for posts by me and HungryHalibut in those threads.  But as the Naim manual states, you create a backup destination on the nas (a new, empty, properly-named shared folder) and tell the HDX to use that destination.  You then tell the HDX how often to do the backup, and if you want it to be incremental, etc.  Then the HDX just does it (when everything is set up right).

The biggest glitch can be naming the new shared folder on the nas; do not put any spaces or special characters in the folder name.

What Bart said. Plus don't forget to bake an external backup of your NAS music backup. A plug in USB drive which can be removed and stored elsewhere will do it just fine.

Yes!  And this is where the nas's backup utilities can be used.  Have the nas back itself up to a usb drive plugged into it.

Bart is absolutely right and I would just add one thing given that I had some problems setting up a QNAP NAS as back up to my Unitiserve. The folder you designate has to be absolutely empty. I found that when I set up a new folder on the NAS it automatically added one or two files be they recycle bins or whatever. These must be deleted or else it won't work.
