Plasma Vs Oled

Posted by: analogmusic on 07 February 2015

I was in the market for the new LG OLED, but even at 2000 GBP I was put off by the price.

Instead I purchased one of the last Samsung Plasmas. at a fraction of the price.

Months later, I am very happy with the picture quality and the price to performance of course.

During the day it's not ideal, but I do most serious watching at night. I have another Panasonic Plasma and the picture is fantastic.

I think once the OLED price drops to levels of todays LCD then I might be interested.

And of course the blacks on OLED are amazing, but it's not like it makes the plasma look bad in comparison.

Keen to know what others think of Plasma vs OLED.

I like the look of OLED screens but feel that they need another generation of evolution.

Maybe when the oldest of my two plasmas gets replaced.

I've looked at the OLED's in shops but I always find it difficult to see alot of difference in a big John Lewis and the mega sized super HD fed demo models always provide another distraction.  Back home, I still find my Pioneer plasma has a wonderful picture quality - long may it continue!

I looked at the OLED's, the 4K's and the best of the 1080P LED/LCD's, and with the current source material I felt that the Sony 55W829B 1080P was by far the best option at this moment in time.

Its blacks are well up with those of the last of the Plasma's now and it's quick too. Very happy with this purchase just before Xmas.

In a few months the question will likely be mute. The state of the art sets of the near future will most likely be 4K/UD OLED. Nothing today comes remotely close. Here in the US, 4K/UD sets are already selling at surprisingly low prices for some brands ($1000-1500). If they can figure out how to reduce the cost of making large panel OLED's the market will be off and running. LG is scheduled to sell large panel 4k OLED by this fall -winter but they won't be cheap. But then again they will be less than the initial prices for the first Sony 4K sets and the Pioneer Kuros of a few years back.

Source material in disc and download will also become much more available later this year. TV sales here go through the roof around Super Bowl time but this year the experts cautioned "wait if you can".

I don't disagree that there will be more 4k material soon but not broadcast, which is where I watch most of my TV from.

Once I'd got past the sharpness of the 4k stuff and looked properly, I realised that the difference between Bluray on a 1080p TV and 4k Bluray material from my normal viewing distance was not enough to make me want to change - especially with the abilities of the processors built into the current 4k TV's.

I reckon that there is about another 2 - 3 years to go before 4k material is the dominant source and makes the premium justified over a good 1080p screen.

I also looked at the 1080p LG OLED and again there are just too many questions about its longevity yet for me to take the plunge there.

I don't like the look of OLEDs next to plasma. My local AudioT in Manchester ran them side by side. I didn't realise and, prefering one by miles asked whether it was the OLED. 'No, sir,' came the reply. 'that's the plasma!'. You can guess what I have in Valhalla

I still use my trusty calibrated Panasonic Vera Plasma. Thhe PSU failed  a couple of years ago, I looked around the market but I couldn't find a picture quality at the resolution of 1080p that I use that bettered it. So I got the TV repaired... People still occasionally comment on the picture quality and 'naturalness'. Just like in audio, I dont want my picture too 'hifi'.

My only slight gripe with Plasma is the high contrast fast movement shadowing you get from the different persistence of the phosphors. But this is splitting hairs, and is rarely noticeable, unless watching hidef black and white material.

that is my opinion also

I like OLED, but somehow plasma looks more cinematic to me.
