Better Call Saul

Posted by: joerand on 08 February 2015

TV holds little interest for me outside of live sports and the occasional movie. My last dedicated show watching was 'Breaking Bad'. Not sure where 'Fargo' has gone? I hope this "prequel series" grabs me the way the original did. Great timing as it will fill that dead-zone between the Super Bowl and the beginning of MLB.

Yes - I'm looking forward to it - but keeping my expectations realistic (I hope)

We are dvr'ing it and will watch it Monday, as we're once again snowed in.

For me, the hook's been set. Looking forward to Monday night's episode. Never saw Tuco in the mix.

NO SPOILERS   We've not watched E:1 yet

I've watched Episode 1 - quirky but good and very watchable

When Saul first appeared in BB it really livened up the series.

Can't wait but I suppose we will have to wait 6 months in the UK!

Sorry Bart. No more spoilers here. Episode 2 set the hook even deeper for me! News has it as the biggest series premiere in cable history, FWIW.

For some reason, I was expecting BCS to be a bit lighter than BB, but it seems to be following the same level of dark noir and intensity.

The first episode was quite a lot of scene-setting and character introduction, and a bit slow in consequence, but the second really moved in forward and sucks you in. Great stuff.

All the high contrast 'hot' photography and close up details of Breaking Bad, and seemingly more drama than comedy. This had a lot to live up to but so far it has I think.

I suspect my Netflix free trial month will become a subscription somehow!

Absolutely - great stuff indeed.

Yes we enjoyed the first episode, and the second did move things along.  Gee there are a TON of commercials!!  We watched all of Breaking Bad after the series had ended, and the Netflix streams are commercial free (I'm pretty sure).  I've been DVR'ing Better Call Saul, and have to fast-forward through the commercials.  I could not imagine watching it in 'real time' with all of those commercials.

We'll enjoy this series I'm sure!

We haven't watched BB so haven't looked at this.

US live sports is another bone of contention, it's like watching adverts with sports interruptions,

BB is fabulous. Even though Better Call Saul is a prequel to BB, I recommend watching BB first!

America's top sports are all played so as to permit commercial interruptions.  They have natural pauses (between innings of baseball) or "time outs."

Football (soccer) just keeps going in a corner of the screen whilst the commercials play, and I have no idea what cricket looks like on TV but they must work in commercials somehow I suspect!

Yep, I agree - completely unwatchable. I'll watch something like ski-racing with the sound off and music playing. The time splits and positions are easy enough to follow from the the graphics without the need for the banal commentary.

Watching sports with the sound off and the music playing is a tradition of mine as well.  It harkens back to my college days.  I always owned a stereo, and usually had a room mate who had a TV.  The common scene in my dorm room was to have the tv on with no sound, and the stereo playing.  I always had one of the better stereos in the dorms, and a decent LP collection (all of which are long gone).

Commercials would be the highpoint for me if forced to watch soccer.

As to BCS, it is moving at light speed. Even more so than Breaking Bad. Three episodes in and I feel we've already moved through a season of progression. Fortunately, AMC (the cable channel here) repeats the same episode immediately after the original airs. I watch it again to pick up any nuances I may have missed the first time around. Did the same thing with BB. The only other show I've felt compelled to watch twice per episode was FX's "The Shield".

Re-opened for you Joe..

Thank you Richard.

I'm curious what others thought of season 1. I found it excellent overall and especially liked the tie-ins with Mike and the Philly PD. I now think of Saul as Jimmy and see him as a pretty well-intentioned lawyer at heart, but certainly willing to stretch the rules. The only real let down for me was the final episode. No real hanging issue to ponder until season 2 begins. And that final episode was pretty slow. The bingo hall scene was dreadfully overwrought. But we did learn of Jimmy's failed marriage. Maybe the Chicago Sunroof will be of some significance in the ensuing seasons?

I thought that it became a bit slow after the first three or four episodes - I didn't appreciate that the last episode was the season finale. Overall I enjoyed it, but not top of my "must watch" list.
