Deezer lossless goes global

Posted by: Solid Air on 11 February 2015

Deezer is apparently rolling out in 150 countries with a lossless FLAC-based streaming service. The cost seems likely to be £120 per year or £15 per month (in UK). Good news as the competition hots up on price, but of course it's hard to know who the survivors will be. Only on Sonos right now.

Let's take as read the 'come on Naim, get on with it' responses, as I think we all get the gist by now.

I'm inclined to hope Spotify respond soon by offering lossless as part of the Connect service, or an extension of it, and save everyone a lot of heartache.

Found this line from a news story about their expansion plans amusing:

"So there is clearly a demand for high-quality streams, though for now Deezer is limiting its offering to Sonos customers. This limitation does make sense though, given that this helps Deezer target consumers it knows cares about the quality of their audio."

If you look at the "Abonnements" section of the French site, the new service has been announced. It's called Qobuz Hifi Sublime, costs 219euro a year instead of 199, and offers 24bit downloads for the price of mp3 for a major part of the catalogue. ie a discount of between 30 and 60%. Excellent news! In one sense hires downloads should be cheaper than redbook or mp3 since there are extra production steps required for the down sampling, but I doubt that will ever happen. I wonder how Linn and Hyperion will react to this repricing?
