Adding a 2nd Network Switch

Posted by: Dungassin on 14 February 2015

I need to install a second GIgabite network switch.  First switch is attached to the Netgear N600 router (all ports on that are Gigabite), and the second switch will be also be attached direct to the router (i.e. not daisy-chained).

The new switch will have the NDS attached to it.

My question is :

Do I need to remove the NDS from its fixed address before installing the switch and then 'refix' the address afterwards, or do I just attach the switch?

Usually as all is and will be the same network, it should be ok to simply attach everything together.

If both switches are unmanaged, just move it.

The switches will learn the new configuration faster than you can!

Huge...are you saying, that if a streamer has a fixed address, and an unmanaged switch is added to the system, the address needs to be changed?

Dungassin, just attach the switch. Normal switches don't need IP addresses to work, they work at a lower network protocol level..

meerkat, standard non routing switches don't use IP addresses, they effectively ignore them.. Switches use the MAC addresses and these are generally fixed into the hardware on most network devices including our Naim equipment.

Just the opposite -- the switches don't care what the IP addresses are (to somewhat over simplify).

I have 2x 8 port netgears connected to the router ... No issues

Cheers Simon...but is it not the router that actually requires the IP address?

Thanks Bart.

Meerkat, yes the router must have IP addresses to route between networks... the TCP and UDP protocols use IP addresses to communicate between devices.. But the switch generally sits below all this and typically doesn't need do to anything with the TCP or UDP protocol to function.

Thanks for all the replies.  I'll getting round to putting the switch in as soon as I can work up the enthusiasm to strip down the AV system for its annual spring clean (dead spiders, etc...)

Might be a while as I am still trying to persuade SWMBO to let me get 500mm Hutter Racks to replace the 20 year old Sound Organisation ones I am using ATM.  Looked at the a podium range as an alternative, but if i read their website correctly, then custom mad ones from them to fit Naim gears would still. be too wide to fit the available space (sigh).

If SWMBO continues to be awkward, I might have to ask my local joiner if he could make me similar spiked shelves.
