Devolo dLAN1200+ wifi ac as wired connection

Posted by: Badlands78 on 26 February 2015

Hi,

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated....

Could I use this Devolo powerline adapter to take Unitiqute2 upstairs and plug it into the wired ethernet connection of the adapter? And then this be as secure connection as the Virgin hub where it is now directly connected to? I can't hack it with the wireless... too distressing

Also would the wired connection upstairs be as speedy as downstairs, as I was also thinking of plugging in a PC to it... As it would be work PC would like the speed not to drop too much...

Many thanks

Sari

Hi Sari,  the Devolo dLAN1200+ (EoM) things are not ideal as they introduce various RFI type noise.  They are beginning to get some bad press but on the other hand they are getting pushed by the ISP people including using them for their installations.  The 1st choice is obviously fully wired ethernet, but I would rate EoM as 2nd choice ahead of wireless.   It will be OK for what you are proposing & I doubt you will notice any speed degradation on your PC - assuming that is, that they do all they say in the sales blurb.

Hello,

I'm not a big fan of hijacking the powerline for Ethernet connections for a lot of reasons. It was fine at 10mb, but as speeds get faster, quality is lacking.

However, if a wired connection is not possible - I would suggest setting up a Wireless AC bridge for this application.  802.11ac has a 500Mbit/s in single link mode and 1GB/s will be more normal in a bridge mode.

My biggest question is will Naim support AC in the near future, or what they could do is use 3 N radios like the Xbox One does for a more stable connection.

You won't really know how well it will work until you try it.  How well these things work depends on the particulars of your house and the wiring.

I used Devolos in multiple rooms a couple of years ago before I moved into my current house, and while certainly better than wifi I found that in some rooms I got better connectivity through a power socket on one side of the room to another.  Even to the extent that using an extension lead from the "good" socket worked better than the "bad" socket.

The other thing you could try is to use something like an Apple Airport Express as a wifi network extender, and plug the Qute into the ethernet port on the AE.

Thanks for the ideas,  the Wireless AC bridge sounds like the the job!

Hi Badland78,

I use a devolo 200av connecting to net gear switch downstairs and the other is connected to my virgin super hub upstairs. Whilst all my music is locally transferred from Unitiserve to my ND5 via the switch I have streamed my US backup from upstairs from my WD Mycloud NAS and to be honest I could hear no difference and even done a blind test with 5 guests and they could not hear the difference. You may suffer from signal dropout from time to time, but I have found this to be minimal. I currently stream Spotify from my ND5 and very happy with the results. Now WiFi is a different kettle of fish, I would always recommend  a hard wired route as your wifi will share your streamer with any other mobile device you have running in the house, for me that is an iPad, 2 iPhones, 2 Laptops and any guests that visit my house.

It will more than do the job.  There will be some gottchas as mentioned previously, like network discovery won't work so you may have to manually type in your IP addresses of your servers, but that is not a big deal.

Just remember an AC Bridge can do 1GB, about the port speak of the average home LAN. Uncompressed .wav files require about 10MB or 1% of available bandwidth. That is overkill for this application by a long shot.  It is even overkill for Video Applications. I stream 1080p video to an Xbox One (3 x 802.11n radios (MIMO) ) so an "n" bridge will work for you too and save you some money over AC.

Of course, we have to do all of this because Naim is still stuck on old b/g radios in a world that is already moving up from n to ac.
