Getting Started

Posted by: Roger Huston on 26 February 2015

Hello,

I am new to this whole thing and am looking for the best place to start on a few topics.

1. CD Ripping - In one of my posts, a gentleman said that Naim prefers uncompressed .wav files to say a lossless .flac files.  Where do you recommend I start with that EAC, Foobar 2000?  What do people use here if they use an external ripper

2. Media Library organization - Is there a "best practices" on that?  Artist - Album - Track Num-TrackName?  I would like to put the year in the Album name with the Encoding structure - Album (1998) [24.192 FLAC].  Or is there a Naim way to do things?

3. ID3 info.  I just tried EAC - still learning it - but it does not seem to write everything to the track - Also, I have yet to find a resource that can really add things like the lyrics to a track.

Any help to get started is appreciated - just a few links to point a newb in the right direction.

Thanks,

Roger

To 1:

use EAC - with the Profile you finde here http://www.audiohq.de/viewtopic.php?id=47

To 2:

depends ON your needs and how you Wanne select.

Do you have a lange classical Music collection?

To3:

Have done it with JRiver, which give you the Opportunity to add tags you need.

DB Poweramp (paid version) for ripping. (It also has a batch convertor which is great for converting multiple tracks from one format to another.)

Tagscanner (free) for editing ID tags subsequently.

I concur dBPoweramp as a ripper. use the replay gain DSP (not  apply) which adds a tag which can equalise the volume on playlists ( depending on streamer and server but best have them tagged from the start)

The  best way to edit once ripped is with mp3Tag ( free but be a good chap and donate if you use it)

what I usually do is add a comment for example 1998 - 24-196. Then there is a simple script option to add this comment on the end of each track or album.

It it can do an awful lot more but once you rip with dBPoweramp you won't need too much manipulation anyway.

I recommend ripping to uncompressed FLAC. It's much more amenable to tagging and can be transcoded to WAV if you wish to.

Jump in and rip a few CDs. Most learning is done on the hoof.

I tried mp3tag and for some reason I didn't get on with it. But as it's free you could try it and see for yourself...

1 - I use Cowan jet audio myself, it works well for me

2 - Organisation and information is up to the individual, I add basic information to mine but you could add lyrics as either a .txt file or .pdf file and add that to the folder containing the albums flac/wav files, it should work.

3 - I'm a huge fan of mp3tag, once learned you can zoom through the tagging process with ease, I can rip an album, transcode ( to ALAC),  resize the art work and sort the tagging out in well under 5mins.

(I use Media human audio converter for transcoding audio)
