HDX won't play CD!

Posted by: PeterX on 02 March 2015

Have just ripped a CD of Lotti's Requiem on my HDX. Everything looks fine all tracks and other info visible and editable. However it won't play! The NServe app shows all the tracks and the header play bar appears and everything looks as if it about to swing into action.

The only strange thing I have noticed is that header play bar does not indicate the first track but some other track! (another CD I ripped at the same time plays OK).

Any thoughts?

Peter

Hi Peter, did you switch to CD playback mode?

Does the CD have some form of copy protection which has corrupted the files in the rip process?  I have one CD which I recently tried to rip which has given problems and it appears there is some copy protection on the CD.  It has allowed me to rip 10 out of the 13 tracks on the disc but will not read or rip the others.  It knows there should be 13 tracks when it starts ripping but shows 3 of the tracks as an error and cannot rip them.  It will, however, play all the tracks on the disc ok directly in play mode, it's just it won't rip it properly.

Have you tried playing the CD in play mode on your HDX?

Chris,Jason

I haven't tried CD playback mode (have never used this mode as I always rip first) but will  try tomorrow.

There was nothing unusual about the rip, it took the usual amount of time and all the tracks info is there. It's also not a SACD as far as I can see.

Yes the CD plays ok in CD playback mode and I can track info etc on the Nserve app.

Just to confirm that the Rip was normal and all tracks/ info is presenT. Just wont play!!

This is such a superb recording the only one I can find of Lotti's requiem.

It might be worth forcing the NDX to rescan the relevant music store. You could always delete the rip and try doing it again.

Tried to delete the rip but was prevented ('not permitted') and I don't know how to rescan the music store!

I guess its not a great problem to actually play the CD when needed.

As you quite often find with computers and technology, they have their moments!  Out of about 400 CDs, I have only ever had trouble with 2 now (from memory) and both seem to have some form of copy protection and are of American origin/manufacture.

It is different in your case though, as it seems to have actually ripped, stored and catalogued the music, but just won't play it.   Can you access the music files and play them on your computer if you go into the HDX using explorer on Windows (or similar if you use Mac)?

The other option of course, if you have a NAS, is to rip the CD using your computer and place the file somewhere on your NAS where your HDX can access it.  If not, you could copy it onto a flash drive and plug it into one of the USB sockets on the back. I have done this for my downloads.

Peter, when you look at the Status & Messages under Tools in the desktop client, do you see any messages that may indicate an error ?

Previous similar problems have been caused by some special characters in the metadata that the HDX retrieves.  Try disconnecting the network so it can't go find the metadata and re-rip...

Only other suggestion would be to copy the ripped WAV album off the HDX and paste to a NAS folder then convert to FLAC (using dbpoweramp music converter perhaps), then use MP3TAG to add the missing metadata to the FLAC files (album, artist, track...).  So long as the NAS folder is one of those your HDX sees, you should be good to go !   (I just did this as I was writing this reply, although the original WAV album is playable, so not exactly replicating your situation, but it should work for you)

Hope this helps !   (Let us know if it does?)

Thanks for sugestions but I'm I'm an analog man which was the reason I bought the HDX and not a NDX. I do not have any other ripping software and am too old a dog to want to learn new digital tricks. I did delete the music file on the NAS and HDX, or so I thought, via finder on iMac, only to find it still there on the HDX!

So thanks again for the suggestions but I'm happy to actually play the odd rogue CD that won't rip, only 1 in 490 so far!

Yes, you have to use the HDX itself to delete things; neither Macs nor PCs will allow you to do it. And also if you're a Mac man then the desktop client that I'm using on my Windows PC isn't the same as yours, I believe!

Last suggestion, then...  got any grandkids that are PC savvy?    Mine, as it happens have been brought up on an IOS tablet diet (I-pads), so they'd be little or no help !

...perhaps CD playback will be with us much longer than some are predicting  (after all, they got vinyl wrong, didn't they?)   I'm saving up for a 555 CD player, btw

No grandchildren but have a savvy son (who incidentally has a NDS) who is good with this sort of thing.

Would be good to know how to use the HDX to delete files etc, where would I find info on this?

Thanks Peter

Hi Peter,

Ring Naim and ask for Phil Harris, if you are connected to his answer machine as him to ring you and he will assist in his usual personable way.

Cheers

Bill.

Thanks Bill for suggestion, have had positive communication with Phil before.

Alls well etc!

Deleted the rip on the HDX (discovered this is done via the front panel not via iMac/ NAS) then re-ripped. This time the ripped CD will play!!

Am I chuffed! Such a superb piece of music and this is the only decent recording that I could find.
