HDX internal backup job disappeared
Posted by: Hoekie on 08 March 2015
I added a backup location on my NAS and created a backup job in the HDX backup scheduler. For some reason my backup job to the internal disc e:\mubk got lost and I'm not able to create it again because e: is not available as destination drive, only the NAS drive is selectable.
How can I add the backup job to my internal drive again?
Thanks in advance for your help.

One has to ask why you'd want to create a backup job to your internal drive, Hoekie?
Inside there's one physical hard drive - if and WHEN* that fails it could take all your music and all your backups with it... leaving you with absolutely nothing except a looong re-rip job.
Always backup to an external device.
* I say when because every hard drive ever manufactured WILL fail at some time - they are electromechanical devices and simply will not run forever. We hope that Naim has selected a manufacturer who makes better-than-average-life disks - and indeed that's what they've done.
Incidentally, as a guy who has run IT departments for too many years, I can assure you that the practice of crossing your fingers and placing your head within the confines of a sand bucket are NOT adequate responses when it comes to disk backup
If the backup was created on the nas . . . it surely was not your e drive. You might not be remembering right.
The backup destination should be on your nas.
Thanks for your replies. My HDX has 2 HDs and I've been told they can crash at the same time. Therefore I plan to backup to my NAS as well but on a monthly schedule and keep the daily backups on the internal HDX drive. However, the job for the internal drive disappeared if if I want to add a new job, I can only select as destination the NAS drive. There is no way I can select the internal backup drive.
Any ideas on this?
Thanks.
I gotta say this: Use the NAS for your daily backups and forget using the server's internal drive(s).
This should also improve your sleep at night.
You can only have one backup location ... if you choose to move your backup location to an external device then you will no longer have internal backup.

Hi Phil, that is clear. I'll stay with the NAS to avoid any risk, thanks.
What happens to the internal backup drive when you back up to an external NAS? Is it available for primary storage?

If you elect to use an external backup it simply backs up to the external device ... the 2nd drive is not retasked as additional mainline storage.

Can those 2-drive models be updated to the current 2tb version that also supports storage of downloads?

Yes ... your dealer can arrange this...

HDX owners might find that a good upgrade! There is more to the upgrade than just the drives.

If a unit is updated to a 2Tb drive then all that is updated is the drive...
...however original HDXs can also have the later HDX PCI card fitted and the memory upgrade too (if they don't have them) but that is separate to (and an additional charge) over the hard disc change.
