TIDAL expands...at least geographically

Posted by: NeilP on 10 March 2015

Received an email today with this news:

We are very pleased to announce that TIDAL is now also available in the following new countries: France, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary and Turkey.

They kindly offered me a 31 day free trial for which I signed up - will now have some fun comparing sound quality and depth of catalogue with Spotify Premium and Deezer Premium+.

Now all I need to do is work out how to get it onto my LMS based NAS  - I think via ickStream...

Allen, I think you'll find Jersey is not officially part of the UK. It has its own international status, but is a British Crown dependant.

Yes, have got the email today.

IT's here now avaliable and a 30 day trial ist possible.

Good chance to compare it with qobuz.

Allen , I suspected that was the case

I do agree with your comment, because I think that the EU has agreed formally from a trading perspective that Jersey is treated as for the UK, or something like that..

Took me less than 5 minutes to get it working with my squeezebox Touch and LMS so don't think you will have any problems. Full details on the Tidal site - just search for LMS and you should get a page titled "How to set up Tidal on Squeezebox". imo the sq is a lot better than Spotify, and the choice and depth of catalogue is wonderful, but the lack of gapless playback and the truly dreadful UI make it a frustrating experience if you like classical music.

Indeed it took me about 10 minutes to get it set up and working and oh boy could I notice a big SQ difference between Spotify, Deezer and Tidal.  I was really surprised by this as I have been really enjoying the streaming experience - but perhaps I have focussed more on the amount of choice and the lack of time to be able to listen to it all!  I am using Squeezepad as the UI and this is fine. The only problem is I need to remember to change the input on my Oppo to USB DAC which is not easy without turning the projector on ( I am using the Oppo app rather than the physical remore control).  Just have to tap "input" 7 times....or was it 8 :-)

I started off thnking the catalogue would be disappointing as my first few searches drew blanks but then I spent the rest of the evening listening to the "recommended" choices and discovered some great music that I would neved have listening to beforehand - and really enjoyed it..

Regarding the EU - my biggest frustration at work (Finance, sort of) is trying to treat the EU as a single entity - in theory it should be - but I cannot ever see that being the case in practice.

I wonder if TIDAL treat the IoM in the same way...

Here is hoping that TIDAL include Jersey for you soon Allen.

I've just had an interesting exchange with Tidal Customer Service (who responded helpfully and promptly), who confirmed that gapless was still being worked on - it really does seem to be taking a long time. And that provision of access to booklets was not high on their priority list. I think it's fair to say that (unlike Qobuz) they're not that interested in the classical niche market.

When you say Deezer, do you mean the Premium+ MP3 or Elite CD quality service?

For anyone interested Deezer's Elite service is gapless when the source is FLAC.

Premium+...Elite is not yet available here in Switzerland and as I am streaming from my NAS rather than a SONOS I am not sure I will be able to get Elite in the near future...who know.  I am not sure that there would be such a difference between Elite and Tidal SQ-wise.

Yes, that's right Deezer Elite is a Sonos customer exclusive for the time being. Fortunately it's not device limited as I have also been running it on the desktop. Only issue is iOS where it appears to be MP3 only. Not sure if that's an iOS FLAC issue or a decision not to offer FLAC on mobile devices. I'm in Zug btw.

Small world - I live 10kms north of Zug (unfortunately on the wrong side of the Kantonal border)  and commute to Zürich.  In fact I am 1km away from my nearest  Naim dealer whcih is much closer than I ever was in the UK!

Although I've lived here for more than 10 years I used a dealer back in the UK. Are you happy with the dealer here and could you name them so I can look them up? Thanks.

They are called hifilounge and if you add a .ch you will find their web page.  My experience is that they are very professional and pleasant people to deal with and I would be happy to recommend them.  The only proviso is that I knew exactly what I wanted (a unitilite)and basically used them to supply it rather than for advice or to do any listening tests.  The rest of my Naim gear was bought in the UK when I lived there - originally from Rayleigh then subsequently Tom Tom both of whom were first class. I have been in CH since 2007.

Thanks Allen - very interesting.  I admit I am baffled as to why a Deezer would limit their Elite service availability exclusively to Sonos.  Still, with tongue firmly in cheek at least that is better than limiting the service to Spotify connect :-)

SONOS rules in service integration and interface. Also, via a competent DAC sounds very good. So a smart move although Deezer will eventually come to other devices. In my rig Deezer through SONOS Connect/NDX or SONOS/Connect/NDAC easily bested Spotify Connect/NDX.
