Are my nuts too big?

Posted by: The Meerkat on 18 March 2015

This is my new DIY 8mm toughened glass platform, as suggested by several forum members. However, I can't help feeling that the M10 Dome nuts look a bit big. So as Arabella Weir would say, "Do my nuts look big on here"?

We can't see your nuts.

Compared to the team mascot at the Rhode Island Institute of Design, I'd say no:

This is actually the school mascot, named "Scrotie"...

As the Dr said to the guy in the transparent shorts '"I can clearly see you're nuts".

My 3 nuts are 10mm wide and sit on a solid Ikea shelving unit supporting SU on1cm thick tempered glass. Sounds very good. I used to have loose metal balls in my nuts, but changed to dome nuts as they slide less when my equipment is pulled by clumsy people and drunks.

KC...on a more serious note, I have ordered some tinted 10mm glass, as I think this may physically look better. I was more concerned about the hight, between the glass and the wooden shelf, which is 20mm. I am assured that the Fraim wood to glass is 15mm. Yea, I know, what's 5mm!

Hi Meerkat,

I don't think the shelf to glass height is particularly important.  I believe the more important factors are

1  The area of contact from the shelf to the nut

2  The mass of the nut

3  The contact patch between the dome and the glass

Have you tried different positions for the nuts?  I found it preferable to have the front ones right under the feet of the ND5 and the rear one between it's rear feet (I'm beginning to see a trend here!).  The difference was minor though.

Hi Huge

When I purchased the dome nuts, I took in to account your comments, about them NOT having a flat. The one's I've got are as round as a ball bearing. As you can see by my photo, (hopefully it's still visible) the nuts are not directly under the feet of the ND5, but I will move them about, and see if anything changes. I have ordered some 10mm toughened, grey tinted glass, just to see if there is any difference. If nothing else, it should physically look a bit better.

I wasn't quite sure, re the damping/blue tack etc...I can imagine though, that sticking 'blue tack' on my nuts and my  arse  glass could be a religious experience!

I think your nuts Meerkat........are in the wrong position.

Try the the nuts on metal framework, not the wooden shelf. You could also try nuts between the glass and base of the streamer?, effectively removing the influence of what look like compliant feet.

Have fun.

I'd heard that meerkats stick together, I didn't know they use blue tack on their  arse  glass!

(but it would explain the photograph Mike found of your 'family').

FC...Re my nuts being in the wrong position. That's what my ex wife used to say!

Can't go on the metal frame, too risky, could slip off. 45cm x 35cm glass too small to do that.

Naim think it's better for them to be on the wood; that's where the the cups and balls are on the Fraim.

I'm sure Naim designed compliant feet for a reason

There's no metal framework or metal shelf on a fraim, only wood. Be pretty difficult not to place it on wood.

The target stand is a completely different kettle of fish, no guarantee the wooden shelf is the best option.

The thing is, if the glass shelf was large enough, it wouldn't take very long to test out.

Cheaper to produce than hard feet.

Naim put hard feet on there top end equipment, I know the CDS2 are not compliant, although that may be down to the PCB's having their own suspension.

Again, wont take long to do the test. Nothing lost but a few minutes of his time.

Meerkat,

I have re- measured my dome nuts and they are 12 mm wide and support the smoke coloured  glass at a wood to glass distance of 15mm. Following  other threads from Huge and Joerand I have also added a piece of blutack at the left rear corner of the glass. I have also placed the 2 front nuts under the 2 front feet of the Unitiserve and Superuniti. What I have noticed, most obviously, is that the Naim boxes no longer vibrate when music over about volume level 40 Is played. ( In my setup the unitiserve is 5" from the right speaker and the SU IS 10" from the right speaker). The lower vibration seems to have brought a greater degree of clarity in bass notes, I seem to be able to follow the bass more easily.

The 10mm bevell edged  tempered glass under each piece of equipment cost about $150US and I feel this was a good investment.Incidentally the nut and ball bearing setup I had previously supporting the glass was far less stable, as the cat, Smoochie, in my avatar would send the nuts and balls flying when she jumped off the equipment!
