I thought I would write a couple of linked posts on:

1. Ripping LPs; and
2. Listening to old recordings!

Old Recordings

The digital capture of my vinyl has been an interesting trip down memory lane. I ripped my favourites years ago, but having decided to take a break from the sweat and toil of work I am now devoting some time to methodically going through the remainder. The methodology that I have chosen to to work through the complete set from one end to another, ignoring poor K-Tel type vinyl ..and anything that I really don't think will get playtime. The latter includes such things as my Tangerine Dream albums, although I have left in such things as La Dusseldorf, Adelbert Von Deyen and Metabolism.

In the process there are some albums that I bought and just never listened to, or had not listened to for many years ...and had forgotten just how good they are!

....and a few that didn't, and still don't, do anything for me.

The unlistened to includes:

Deja Vu - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
I remember buying and thinking I ought to give it a listen, well I did ....thirty years later! What a brilliant album. Not consistently, there are tracks I do markedly prefer but nothing that is poor. Been listening to this a LOT over the last two weeks.

Musicquarium I - Stevie Wonder
This is a bit of a cheat as I have all his music on ripped CDs ....but, I had never listened to this album that I bought second hand. Somehow the vinyl rip is just SO much more alive than the CD based tracks, maybe it is the LP12 mid-bass emphasis ....keep listeing to this as well.

Casebook - Dr Feelgood
Never listened to, and I have no other albums by them. Talented guys.

Nothing Like the Sun - Sting
I have the well known tracks elewhere, but this is a real tour de force.

The remembered:

American Pie - Don Maclean
Loved this in my teens, and the songs are still fresh in my memory. Should have picked this out and ripped it long since.

Still Crazy After All These Years - Paul Simon
This is on the edge of being scrapped, the vinyl is so ...well loved! Great stuff. I think this is his best, although I do love One Trick Pony.

Water Sign - Chris Rea
I really had forgotten what a superb album this is.

The bad:

Greatest Hits - Carol King
OK, it is a compilation ....but, I LOVE her music, I just wish there was a decent recording somewhere, and this ISN'T it.

Ummagumma - Pink Floyd
Self intoxicated crap.

Stars - Janis Ian
Dissapointing

Sin After Sin - Judas Priest
Great vinyl, and now I remember why, doesn't do a thing for me.

Bad Luck Streak at Dancing School - Warren Zevon
See Sin After Sin.

Very interesting. Sadly I would not have the patience to rip my vinyl to digital.

I know exactly what you mean about playtime. I have some records that I have not played yet!!

Must dig out a La Düsseldorf album today.

La Dusseldorf really takes me back! As do Cannibalism, Michael Rother, Kraftwork et al. Listening to it now I think some is totally OTT, but there is a lot to like here.
