Dogs & Records.

Posted by: av in bc on 30 March 2015

We want to get a dog and have never had one.

I'm a bit worried about the records on the floor. There is really nowhere else

to put this part of the collection since the only other room available is also filled with albums.

Can dogs & records coexist?

this is kind of what i have to deal with and there's more behind couch and on other walls.

record boxes are an option but they are expensive and i would need at least 13.

I've lived with a Yorkie and a King Charles Cavalier for both of their lives and have a large record collection from floor to ceiling. Never had any dog damage. Music made them happy!

I'm sure you'll be fine and perhaps even share the same taste in music!

I thought that this thread would be about dogs and music.

When I was in college, I had a friend whose dog reacted oddly to . . . Imagine by John Lennon.  It's as if there is some ultra-sonic signal in it. Whenever he'd put the title track from that LP on, the dog would start howling.

My problem with dogs -- dogs and rugs are not compatible.  Our dog, when he gets mad about being left alone (which we must do sometimes), will throw up or urinate on a living room rug.  We now have no living room rug, and a boomy sound in that room

the little Pug is one paw move away from ruining that record!

that's a lot of trust.

What breed are you thinking of getting? A large young moulting dog with lots of energy could decimate that room and collection in seconds! We have owned lots of dogs (collies, lurchers, labradors, terriers, heinz57s) and it is essential to check if the animal is well trained and has a placid demeanour. You may not have the time or ability to train the animal correctly yourself. Our only problem with our Lab is that he is unsteady (age / arthritis / old injuries) so may topple expensive speakers, I'm currently running cheaper speakers in areas he is allowed, which has been a suprise as the bargain Focals really are excellent vfm.

We have a couple small dogs (one maltese, one cavalier king charles) and only once did the cav pull one record from the lower shelf. Hasn't tried it since.

During the training phase it may happen, but it's like anything else in the house - be very careful with puppies, as anything within range can be destroyed, but once they grow a bit it it ceases to be an issue.

does Naim make dogs?

the dog for us should be small and calm a bit like a cat without the attitude.

i don't know the breeds at all and we're novices so easy to train is a must.

we love all dogs so not picky.

i guess i could put a barrier in the hallway for when we're not home to

keep the record room closed off.

Get a cat.   No seriously you need to research and research some more until you are confident you want a dog and what breed or type. Find a good breeder or take your luck in a charity dogs home.

No. Don't get a cat. Our first cat decimated the sleeves of many albums by sharpening his claws on their spines as they stood helpless in their shelving alcove.

I use these for records on the floor from the Really Useful Box Company. Great for moving them around for cleaning, keeps dust, pets, children etc. out. Not glam but very functional. Holds up to 50 LPs I think.

That's a lovely living room!

Dogs and LP's can coexist without problems, however it is a good idea to take certain steps to prevent the puppy from chewing up furniture - as well as your records. It's not a breed specific problem and all puppies can have this tendency. It's impossible to predict if your puppy is likely to start chewing your furniture. We have two Welsh Terriers and they are tenacious little creatures. In order to avoid too much destruction during their teething period we sealed them off in the kitchen and gave them plenty of toys before going to work. Toys filled with liver pate is such a hit with puppies and keeps them busy for a long time. You can also cover up the bottom shelves during the teething period. We've used sides of steel mesh from a compost binge untill they lost interest in chewing the house up.

my avatar shows my dog listening to a record. if i play a record, she comes running, jumps on the sofa and sleeps. she has never done anything with the records, but she destroyed parts of the wallpaper . so, enjoy!

Thanks for all the great advice.

looking for a rescue but there are not many around

these days, mostly 2 or 3 per shelters and the heavy barking kind.

we do have restrictions for size as well in our complex.
