Nothing will change the world (to a better place).

I'm not sure that past protest music so much dictated political direction as responded to it and rode the wave.

In retrospect, rock music from the Viet Nam era plays powerfully with video images of protests and the overall tide of sentiment against the war in the US at the time. But the power was in the mass protests.

The media coverage and issues today are much more diverse. Perceived injustices are everywhere, so choose your topic; it becomes diluted. How big will a protest song against ISIS play in today's world? Might get you a death threat, but will it help your record sales? Use music to get young people off their asses in mass to demonstrate? The 60s was a unique time in space, and I don't see it ever happening again to that degree.
