Artist name listings on Superuniti/ReadyNAS

Posted by: adclem on 06 April 2015

Hi all

Apologies if this is a duplicate, I have looked without luck to find a solution.

I'm using a Mac, a Netgear ReadyNAS and Superuniti. Music is either ripped from CD with XLD or downloaded from various stores.

Artists are listing as a mix of first name, surname and surname, first name. For instance, I have "Jack White" and "White, Jack" listed separately for different albums.

Naively, I thought that putting albums in the same folder would list them together. I can't find any obvious way to merge these two together.

Another annoying one is Bjork and BjÖrk listed separately.

I've seen mentions of altering the metadata but can't find out how to do it.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Adam

Hi Adam,

It's all about metadata (tags) on the files.  The folders the files are in are irrelevant.

For the Mac, I use Metadatics to edit metadata.  It's a great metadata editor.  You just add the files, and then are presented with a spreadsheet-like display where you can edit attributes, song-by-song or multiple songs at once.

PS I highly recommend doing the edits, THEN adding the files to your server.

Finally . . . note that the metadata presented to your Superuniti is all up to the server.  You may quickly find that the Netgear's built-in UPnP server is not very robust.  You may want to buy a better nas - from Synology or QNAS.  Those will run more robust servers -- their own and Asset or MinimServer.

dBpoweramp is a great product that will rip CDs, convert from one format to another, and let you change the metadata to your heart's content. It's so easy, even I can use it.

I have to slightly disagree on this. It really depends on one's needs. I have happily used ReadyDLNA for awhile already and although I admit that Asset (I have no experience on MinimServer) might be more versatile as an UPnP server for me those additional features have not been necessary.

Thats brilliant, thank you!

I'll get metadatics and give it a go... and bear in mind dbpoweramp for ripping going forward.

Re the ReadyNAS,  I actually chose it based on reputation from this forum, but I've had it for a while so I know it was a bad choice. Every time I add an album, each track is listed 3-5 times in the album folder and it needs a manually selected re scanning. The automatic re scan doesn't seem to fix it. Album covers show on the wrong album and seem to move about at leisure. Its basically crap and will need to be replaced at some point.

Thanks again

Sorry to hear your problems with your NAS. However, I have not experienced any of those so far but maybe I have just been lucky.

Not too uncommon -- what works for some doesn't for others.  "If it's not broken don't fix it" is great advice . . . which I rarely take myself

Yes I know where you're coming from. I too have a readyNas (duo mk1) and every time I add an album I have to do a manual rescan or leave it a couple of days to sort it out.

Also I have to go into settings on my Nexus 7 and phone and clear the cache of the Naim app, which sorts the album covers out. This was suggested by some kind person here on the forum and has helped a lot.

Cheers
