The Faust Tapes - Artwork

Posted by: Basel Boy on 13 April 2015

I visited the "A Marriage of Styles - Pop to Abstraction" exhibition at the Mascalls Gallery and they had on display "Crest" by Bridget Riley. I spent many an hour gazing at this in the past as it is the cover art for the Faust Tapes. Quite moving to see it in real life and it really is mesmerizing as the black and white lines fool the brain into seeing colour.

Worth a trip for this alone but the whole exhibition is a joy.

On at Mascalls Gallery, Paddock Wood, Kent until 6th June.

She is an interesting artist. Her works can polarise views a bit; certainly I have stood in a gallery and heard people mutter 'any fool could do that, don't see the point' etc.

I like her colour works though and in general I think a lot of her output is surprisingly subtle and complex. It definitely shows much better in real life and scale than on screen or the printed page. I'm not sure I'd want to live with one of her pieces though.

Looking at the website the exhibition includes Patrick Caulfield. Another very smart colourist.

I generally have quite abstract/minimalist taste in art.

Good observation.

On the album artwork theme, Anthony Frost's work was used on a couple of Fall albums. His son Luke produces some very fine and very subtle colour field works. Often what look like simple two colour abstract paintings resolve into far more nuanced shading on careful study.
