i8.3 a nightmare

Posted by: Dungassin on 20 April 2015

Well, last night I 'upgraded' to iOS 8.3 on my iPhone 6 plus.  I tend to avoid these updates unless I have a problem, but the upgrade was prompted by the recent upgrade to Yosemite 10.10.3, which replaced iPhoto with the new Apple Photos app on the iMac.  As a result, I found my photos were no longer synching on the iPhone.  So, I did the iOs ugpgrade.

Problems :

1. At first the iPhone wouldn't link to iTunes on the Mac as I set about the upgrade.  Kept reporting something on the lines of incompatible cable, and might not work (can't remember the exact wording.  Strange, because it's the USB cable supplied with the phone, and I'm always careful to avoid flexing the plug joints when plugging/unplugging,  Eventually it decided to work.

2. I sat down to listen quietly to one of my Audiobooks on the phone, plugged the headphones in, and the damned phone wouldn't switch on.  The screen just flashed a bit and then went blank again.  Eventually switched on by holding the power switch for a little longer (why did that work?).   Then I found that when touched the play button in on the iTunes Music app, play didn't actually start.

Scratched my head for a bit, then unplugged the headphones (B&W P5), and the switch on problem and failure to play resolved.  However, the minute I plugged the phones back in (while it was playing the book) the playback stopped!

Got out the apple earplugs (I hate the things - they make my ears sore).  Same result.

Gave up and went to bed.

This morning tried again : same result.  Rebooted the iPhone.  Problems now appeared to be solved, then ...

Problem 2.

Sitting there listening to my Audiobook on headphones (SWMBO still in the Land of Nod), when all of a sudden the playback suddenly started breaking up and going fast/stuttering.  Hitting pause didn't work, so Powered Off the phone and on again.

Seemed OK for a while, then it did it again.

Then another problem appeared : a message appeared on the screen which implied that I had issued a voice command and the phone tried to make a call to Gatwick Airport (which is NOT in my list Contacts).  Managed to stop the call, then found that if I started the Audiobook again every time I tried to put the phone down, the 'voice control' screen reappeared.

Got a phone call from a friend, asking why I had called him this morning.  I hadn't - and explained to him that the phone was playing silly buggers.

Went into Phone Settings, and made sure that that stupid Siri thingy was switched off.  Turned out it was on, so switched it off.

Hopefully problem is now fixed, but only time will tell.

Seriously thinking about seeing if I can roll back to an earlier version of iOS ...

Ouch.

Nothing wrong with my iPhone, iPad or MacBook after the updates at all.

Now seems to be working apart from one little foible.  Now the music player starts playing when I plug in headphones!  Rather annoying when listening to an audiobook, because it means 'rewinding' a little bit.  Otherwise all seems well.

I still want to know why I had to re-enable all my iCloud settings.  I can understand having to re-enter the password, but why doesn't it remember the settings after updates?  All the other settings (position on audio tracks etc) don't need resetting.

I recall that I had to redo my iCloud settingswhen I updated the iPad a few weeks ago as well.

I have a Cocktail Audio (rips CD & internet radio).  One day I switched it on and it gave me notice there is a new update for Frimware, would I like to update Yes or No. I thought to my self well why not lets have improved and latest frimware.  I pressed Yes, then the component went into a certain state, I suppose it was uploading the frimware.  Then I switched it back on, most of the usual options were there, so I went to my listed ripped cds section to play a song and to my horror all the saved cds were gone, empty!  Thanks to Cocktail Audio recovery forum I was advised that a fault occurred while updating frimware and told me how to return to my original frimware.  I did this and thank god all my saved CDs appeared.  I have all the required needs from my original frimware, and from the experience of the above I will refuse all future upgrades.  If it is not broke why bother to fix it and take on risks?

Well, I thought it was fixed, but yesterday it started doing it again : random switches to what I assume is a Voice Control screen (strange, because I switched voice control off), sudden doubling of playback speed then reversion to normal speed, suddenly deciding to switch to the next chapter (of an audiobook).   Sudden pauses in sound an restarting again.

The Apple bug reporting scheme is total crap.  Seems you have to register as developer to post things like that to them.

Funnily enough, none of these problems have happened when using it attached to my car radio via the iPhone head socket (BMW have yet to come up with a Y lead so I can control the iPhone 6 plus from the car radio contols).
