Sonos Connect - is this correct?

Posted by: badlyread on 25 April 2015

Hi All

I have a SqueezeBox Touch fronting my streaming (new to me formerly UQ2) and I'm getting a little annoyed with the Spotify app as a lot of stuff like my albums are missing, no artist radio, some playlists empty etc. I know SB is no longer supported by Logitech but has a wonderful support community that are unable to sort this out (more needs to be done by Spotify who are not interested I believe). I am happy with the Spotify quality for my discovery/background listening so don't go there!

Anyway, getting to the point, is the Sonos (much better integration) limited to 16/44.1 res? Even if I have an Arcam rDAC that can handle much higher? Need it to handle the hires stuff on my server.

Many thanks

Neil

If you are comparing Sonos to Logitech apps,  I can't really compare.. When I had a SB it was quite a few years ago and the streaming was more limited back then.. I guess we are in second generation streaming now..

However the Sonos Connect with its app works well with approx 40 different streaming services.. This number and actual services varies where you are in the world.

Spotify, Deezer, Qobuz, Tidal, SoundCloud, Amazon plus many many more (some free, some subscription) all work natively from the Sonos app (Windows, OSX, iOS, Android)

In the Sonos world, Streaming services are like OnDemand radio stations...you can tune in to suit your tastes, quality and to some extent (using Sonos) features.

Thanks for the reply Simon.

My main question was is the Connect limited to 16/44.1 res even if I use another DAC?

Thanks again.

Hi Neil, the Sonos can provide the following 16 bit sample rates 48kHz, 44.1kHz, 32kHz, 24kHz, 22kHz, 16kHz, 11kHz, and 8kHz as a transport.

Thanks for the clarification Simon.

Sean Adams (SlimDevices) certainly knew a thing or two. What is he up to now?

Have just read that Sonos are upping the game to hires soon.

What is your source for Sonos moving to hi res soon?

Thx...M

Below was posted two weeks ago on the Sonos support pages.

This thread seems to be addressing two different conversations, so we’d like to clarify.

The original request is to support 24 bit audio tracks on Sonos components, to which the status is still Not Planned. We are constantly monitoring these threads and will continue to pass on your feedback to our product teams.

We recently added high quality, lossless tracks to Sonos in the form of 1411 kbps streaming content to Sonos, from services such as TIDAL and Deezer HiFi. We’re very proud of these new partnerships and are excited to develop them further.

We’ll let you know if anything changes. Please keep the discussion courteous and on topic.

Google 'Sonos hires Guardian'.

Yep, I read that also last fall and asked the Sonos North American sales manager at a event in North Carolina and said hi res was not on in development. Sonos feels its more important to make sure their systems work all the time and hi res was a different challenge. Maybe someday but personally I struggle to hear any difference between well engineered 44.1 and hi res although looking forward to Naim implementation of  DSD to my NDX. If the Chord 2Qute finally shows up in the US I'll try one with the Sonos.

I own the following streamers

sonos connect

squeezebox duet

cyrus stream x signature

all three systems feed from a dbm 2Tb vortexbox. I'm currently selling the cyrus stream x signature due to its lack of direct live streaming capability.

sonos v squeezebox duet is a close call re functionality as both offer qobuz hifi streaming, I guess if your happy with 16/44 recordings then sonos is the easiest to use & supported, if you want to future proof yourself i think sonos are missing the trend towards high rez, instead aiming at mass market.

im also able to stream direct from my DBM Vortexbox with great success via its usb output into my dac. It can handle high rez up to 24/192khz, auto rip CDs to Flac, stream from deezer, qobuz, spotify, bbc, etc & all for just £330 delivered.
