Can the UnitiServe be connected through a wifi hotspot?

Posted by: Jan-Erik Nordoen on 25 April 2015

I would like to demo the UnitiServe to a friend who has no home network. If I use an iPhone as a wifi hotspot, I can connect to it with a MacBook, but is there a way to get the UnitiServe on the same network? Is there a device I can plug into the U/S (e.g., a wireless adapter) so that I can see the U/S on my Macbook?

The objective is to use the Mac as a control point for the U/S.

Thanks,

Easiest to take a router and cables with you and just create a small (intranet) network for the demo. The router defaults should suit you fine. You don't need Internet access to play things stored locally, so it won't matter that your friend doesn't have anything at his place - unless internet radio or online streaming (eg Spotify) is your goal. You can't use your iPhone as a router, and its ability to serve as a wifi access point (to the Internet, over your mobile phone connection) is pretty limited anyway.

Best of luck,

Thanks very much Alan, that's actually how I use the U/S at a country home, so I'll go with that.

Great!

Also, if you're going wired for everything except the iPhone as a remote control using the naim app, you don't need anything expensive! There are plenty of easy to use routers with four port 100BaseT switches (ie not GigE or GigabitE or 1000BaseT (which are all the same and faster) and wireless N (or even G) that will suit this purpose. Under $50 is easy, under $30 you have to luck into a sale. TPLink is a very low cost brand but still okay for reliability if that helps...
