Tracks that best show PRaT

Posted by: Simon-in-Suffolk on 26 April 2015

With the resurgent discussion of PRaT on the forum, I thought it would be fun to share those recordings that we feel really shows this capability on our Naim equipment and gets that foot tapping...

As many have streaming services and / or sizeable music collections we should be able to sample the recommendations.

To kick off (track/artist)

We love to boogie.      T.Rex

Lovin' Machine.           Wynonie Harris

One of my favorite PRaT records: Joy Division Closer, especially the B side with Heart and Sould and 24h: http://youtu.be/VnM9X0IgUmg

This other favorite of mine is more on the funky side: Booker T and Questlove Down in Memphis

For Halloween spooks and PRaT, line up artist: Rob Zombie for tracks Living Dead Girl, Dragula and Thunder Kiss '66. Chunky riffs and rhythms with pace thrown right in.  There is his album Spookshow International Live via TIDAL as well.

There is a flurry of discussion recently about 'power' of Naim amps and Naim power supplies.  For a power PRaT session for your Naim, play these:

fight the power - PUBLIC ENEMY

the power - H-BLOCKX (cover of original by SNAP)

take the power back - RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE

powerslave - IRON MAIDEN

just 'cos you got the power - MOTORHEAD

Evil Ways - Cal Tjader and Carmen McRae (Sonny Henry)

"Putting out Fires" or "Keith Don't Go" - both by Nils Lofgren

They both also happen to contain some of the best guitar playing I've ever heard.

Nelly Furtado - Powerless

Keb'Mo" - Suitcase (the whole album)

The Vard Sisters - Heavenly (the whole album)

Look out for the documentary which might be repeated on Sky Arts - Classic Albums: British Steel

Interesting when Rob Halford described the recording processes, including using a cutlery set borrowed from the wife of a band member, to do the metal sound effects on 'Metal Gods' .  All before the internet days, before laptop computers and apps offering 20,000 sound samples.

Rob Halford also has good solo albums.

All the albums by SKINDRED (find on Tidal)

Top grade reggae/ ska-punk/ metal authentically crafted in Newport South Wales

It will be under his solo-artist-plus-band group called Halford

"Resurrection" and "Crucible" are their first two studio albums.  Their sound is much more based around the Judas Priest "Painkiller" album, so that heavier 'biker metal' type of rock-metal.

Managed to have a listen to the CDs over weekend.  My favourite is the CD album of "Resurrection"  and track Cyber World.  There is one guest appearance by Bruce Dickinson too.

Good PRaT throughout of course, TIDAL has a compilation called "The Essential Rob Halford"

- turn up the volume..
