Tracks that best show PRaT

Posted by: Simon-in-Suffolk on 26 April 2015

With the resurgent discussion of PRaT on the forum, I thought it would be fun to share those recordings that we feel really shows this capability on our Naim equipment and gets that foot tapping...

As many have streaming services and / or sizeable music collections we should be able to sample the recommendations.

To kick off (track/artist)

We love to boogie.      T.Rex

Lovin' Machine.           Wynonie Harris

An excellent choice from a terrific band!

Two Trains from Dixie Chicken probably also deserves a recommendation.

Big time!

...another...Dave Brubeck...Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story..(song) Night and Day. CD version is excellent, vinyl is awesome.

Charlie Hunter. Greasy Granny from Bing, Bing, Bing!

If you like modern Jazz and don't know about Charlie, you have REALLY been missing out. This man is probably the best musician since Miles Davis.

Edit; this album is just STONKING!!!!

From this album?

Music from West Side Story

I don't have any Dave Brubeck, so might this be a good place to start?

How about something from Naim?

OCDC from Get the Blessing.

Jazz, and also not really for beginners. But it's immense both musically and in recording quality

Another change of pace is Haim, Days Are Gone

Very Pop. very mainstream, it's like Fleetwood Mac's Rumours brought up to date. It flows along beautifully and I highly recommend it.

Exquisite, slow, beautiful post-modern jazz piano trio with groove.

Esbjorn Svensson Trio (e.s.t.), From Gagarin's Point of View from the Retrospective album. Esbjorn sadly passed on at a young age.

Retrospective - The Very Best of E.s.t.

Going slightly off-topic, but still great for assessing hifi, do you have Just A Stone's Throw Away by Valerie Carter?

It's pretty much a Little Feat album with VC as the singer, who used to be Lowell George's girlfriend and can sing better than almost everyone

Very, VERY highly recommended. She has an exquisite voice.

Just a Stone's Throw Away

That's it. Many great Brubeck albums. Time Out (Columbia version CD is HDCD). Live at Carnegie Hall...excellent.

Big fan of some types of Indian music...namely Odissi dance music...also love to photograph it.

If you have the patience check this out for PRaT...lot's of pace changes and the like, but four minutes in before it gets really incredible.  The typical dance has stages and the preliminary stages are general not as good as the middle parts of the dance.

Note the bells on the ankles, which are also a key instrument.

Thank  Sneaky

That was a beautiful piece of music and dance of the highest artistry. It is lovely to have ones horizons expanded like this now and then.

Sadly, this music is not available commercially...it's LIVE right there at the dance in most instances.

P.S.  This is the most beautiful Indian music I've ever heard, if you liked the other, give this one a few listens (may need some time to acquire the taste).  Also this is a crappy recording...but if you are like me and don't mind some noise or pop/clicks (ala vinyl)...this is a gem.

P.S.S.  Some of the best Odissi dancing I've ever seen too (note the FACE and NECK movements).  Remember to wait for the intro to finish.

Just been enjoying Autobahn by Kraftwerk, and wow the PRaT works well.. What is noticeable the electronic rhythms are all or mostly manual, and so there are micro variation in timing and it adds a certain tension to the pulsating rhythms.. Great stuff.

Not sure if these are manual or not, you must have a good ear.  But I love walking the path of electronica history with all these tracks:

  • Radio-Activity- Kraftwerk
  • The Model - Kraftwerk there is a great B&W Youtube video of this with lots of retro models
  • Don't Go - Yaz is always an exciting track that puts a charge into me.
  • Cars - Gary Numan ...such a good one.
  • I feel love - Donna Summer is also a great historical "techno" track, way ahead of its time!
  • Genius of Love - Tom Tom Club a secret favorite of mine

After that it gets pretty high-tech and not what I could call retro anymore...anyone got anymore?

Ok, back on the theme of retro, I used to be keen into  Electro (amongst many other genres)when I was around 16/17 it was exciting and a lot coming in from New York. It was more raw than the UK Jazz Funk and Soul sound at the time (which I also enjoyed). I particularly enjoyed flooring other people's music systems when playing this 12" loud! great PRaT..

Planet Rock:    Afrika Bombaataa and the Soulsonic Force

This is interesting as the Electro sound was from my memory at least, the start of what merged out of Jazz, RnB and Rap to became Hip Hop and Trip Hop.. I love all the old analogue sounds and 8 bit Fairlight samples... Certainly of an era and yet another defining moment in urban pop music.
