Sinn watches

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 27 April 2015

I've been thinking about getting a decent watch for a while - preferably a mechanical one that doesn't need batteries. I liked the look of a Tudor I saw in an advert, which cost far too much for me. When I googled it, lots of people seemed to be saying get a Sinn instead. I confess I'd never heard of them, nor seen them in the shops. Reviews seemed great though, so I took the plunge and bought their cheapest 556A.

What a lovely thing it is - understated and not too big. So many watches seem to be huge and really blingy, but nobody notices the Sinn, which is great. It's got a glass back so you can see the spinny bits and the thing that swings around to keep it wound - I'm not very technical. It seems that it uses a Swiss movement that lots of more expensive watches use, but Sinn are actually German.

Has anyone else got one? I was thinking that if anyone ever did ask what it was, I could sing them some Pet Shop Boys, but sadly I understand it's pronounced zin. Never mind.

IWC MKvii Automatic has a 36mm bezel and is a wonderfully elegant and understated classic HH: pic in 'Stuff I Love' in my profile.

'Chrono24' a good on line source.

Ha! - The hands on the XVi are also slightly different in being shaped (he noted nerdily).

Mine back with IWC for a service just now and I really miss it!

Servicing always seems to take forever .....

It uses the ETA 2824 which is an excellent movement.  It's widely used for good reason - the best of them can be very accurate, very reliable, and when the time comes for servicing, their very ubiquity stands you in good stead for future parts availability.

The Tudor you considered probably used an ETA 2824 too - albeit modified by Tudor Rolex.  My own Tudor, exactly the same...

The MK XII uses the factory caliber 884 . Based on the Jaeger LeCoultre 889/2, the movement iwas one of the finest automatics manufactured at the time.

Sorry Graeme, I was referring to HH's new Sinn watch.

At Baselworld Tudor announced that their two most popular models, the Pelagos and North Flag would be getting movements completely designed and assembled in house.

With an in house movement, rubber strap option and half the price of a Submariner the Tudor Pelagos makes for a very nice diving watch.

Hi

I have a number of friends who have bought Sinn watches and every single one of them has had to go back due to manufacturing and quality defects. I will never buy a Sinn. There are lots of top notch watch brands out there with their own movements that are within the Sinn orice bracket.

Ah, OK.

The IWC MK XV uses the ETA 2824 and it is almost identical to the XII but 38mm.

I had a very nice black Sinn 556 but unfortunately the black powder coating wore quite badly over 4 or 5 years. I sold it a little disappointed. On reflection I wonder if it was a faulty batch and could maybe have been sorted out.

I like the simple pilot style so ended up replacing it with an Archimede. Not dissimilar, and equally fine value. Totally accurate and reliable to date.

and no body's mentioned the iconic U1 !!!

No issues with mine 5 years down the line. The PVD coating looks as a good as it did on day 1 and it's managed to resist quite a few knocks. It's my daily wearer at the moment as my other watches are in for servicing.

My IWC fund went Devialets way instead

I'll keep my fingers crossed then.

Hi

The other thing to bear in mind is that should your watch need servicing or repairs of any sort they have to go back to the factory and will take a minimum 6 to 8 months before you get it back. So you pay a fair whack for the watch and if anything happens you don't get to wear for a a substantial part of  a year!!

If you want to get the full details on Sinn or watches then goto a forum like tz

I think you'll find that Sinn are thought of as a good entry brand in the luxury end of the market. It's very rare to see any complaints about the brand though there are some models (movements) that are better than others. My two Sinn watches have been super reliable with exceptional time keeping (for an auto that is).

My mechanical TAG is now 15 years plus, with no issues, nor servicing (nor batteries). I wear it 24/7 including all water-sports, showers, washing-up, bicycle riding, motorbiking, running, swimming, snorkelling, diving (shallow) and other activities. Especially impressive is the sapphire face, which in spite of being proud of the bezel does not have a single scratch or mark on it. Seemed a bit pricey at the time (couple of thousand dollars as I recall), but what a watch! Love it.

I've got a Sinn U1 and a 756S. They're great watches; well built and tough.

I have a collection of Rolex watches gold, stainless and bimetal bought over the last 35 years.. And an IWC portafino Chrono with a Milanese mesh bracelet... By far my favourite.. Bought a couple of years ago.. I never take it off
