Iphone 6 and Ipad Air into DAC V1 with Lightning to USB connection kit

Posted by: analogmusic on 28 April 2015

I have purchased the Lightning to USB connector kit from apple and can now play directly from my Iphone 6 into the DAC V1 through the USB input. I don't think the third party kits from  non apple vendors will work.

It is something very useful, as I don't want to connect directly a laptop into the V1 all the time.

Now the fun really is that when you have a Squeezebox server running on a NAS, the Ipeng IOS app with the additional in-app purchase turns the iphone into a Squeezebox touch, and I can stream directly from the NAS into the Iphone into the DAC for headphone listening at night.

This is pretty cool for me, because I still like to listen to music when the family is sleeping.

I had a 30 minute music session last night and really enjoyed it. My DAC V1 is now on my bedside table doing duties as a Naim Headphone amp.

The other USB DACS like Dragonfly and Meridian explorer draw power from the USB and I think the Iphone will not allow too much of a power drain (maybe limited to 0.5A) so I think it should be a self powered DAC like the V1 for this kind of usage.

That sounds like a good solution for non-portable iPhone listening. The iPhone won't allow a Dragonfly to work with it because it draws too much power. There is a workaround for this which involves adding a small USB battery, but even then you have to fool the iPhone into not recognising the Dragonfly, which is too much faffing around for my liking.

Thanks for the post!...

Usually posts are problems or questions and your post seems simply for the good of the group.

Nice to see.

Thank you

I believe some desktop DACs also require power via USB and make the iDevices refuse to work. I read up on this a while ago; I think there was a thread on head-fi about what did/didn't work.

The ifi Nano DSD DAC/headphone amp also works via the camera connection kit, a friend has one.

Another thanks from me for posting, it's useful to know this works.

iPhone digital directly into a Sony PHA-2 DAC/headphone amp. Only a simple Lightning to USB cable required.
