Possible to display album art under folder view in N-Stream?
Posted by: engjoo on 01 May 2015
Hi there, I am using a Synology NAS (DSM 5.1) and would like to know if anyone on Synology or otherwise is able to get album art to be display at the folder level ?
Is this a limitation of the upnp server or N-Stream ? I was able to view the album art at the track level but not folder level.
Have you tried saving the relevant artwork in each folder with the name folder.jpg? i.e. save the artwork for Waterloo in the Waterloo folder as folder.jpg
BTW - I like your method of getting the albums to display in chronological order and might try that myself.
Yes Synology's Media Server will send album art so that you can view it in the Album view on the Naim App. As above, check that the art is a file called folder.jpg in the same folder at the music for the particular album.
Yes & No - under Browse by Folder view the clue is in the title, you get a "folder" & you get no art until you open the actual album
To get art - first you need to have your Media Server DMA Style set to "Advanced" , or you own choice of options in Custom (3)
Browse by Album Artist - you will get the artist listed in a folder, then under that level when the artist folder is open you will get all the albums shown as art (the album covers). So in your app picture under ABBA, each of those albums will be shown with the album cover art instead of a folder.
In advanced you can also browse by artist & that will show you a mixed up listing of individual listed tracks from all albums in alphabetical order, each with the album cover art.

You don't need to do that Bart, yes its OK to do it, however the art is embedded in metadata plus you can edit the loaded metadata & go get another/different art picture from www.

Yes I was able to view album art if I browse by Artist / Album.
My preferred browsing style is by folder so I was wondering why can't this be done.
Not Artist/Album - I am saying Album Artist - its different
Like I said in my post - browsing by folder means you get what you asked for

I don't know if it "Can't" be done . . . but it isn't done with the Synology server.

I'm with Bart on this one. Plex shows art in folder view (possibly getting its own images from the web), but neither MediaServer nor MinimServer running on Synology send images in the folder browsing mode. Album, Artist, and Artist/Album yes, Folder no...at least in the ways I have tried configuring them. YMMV...

one more time -
With Synology if you "browse by folder" , you get folders only - it duz wot it sez on the label
If you browse by Album, Artist or any other combo's, then you get art.
Yes I understand it cannot be done - at least in N-Stream..
It is however possible in Synology's "DS Audio" app.
This is useful if say you have an artist folder and you are able to have a folder.jpg in the directory itself to represent the artist. Makes browsing via folder more fun.

I am not sure what you are missing, but this is the Naim app (n-stream as u call it) working from Synology Media Server DSM 5.1 (latest) DMA set to Advanced & browsing by Album Artist, it can be as variable sized icons all over the screen as shown, or a column down the left side only & again variable sized icons.
Hi MikeB -
Nobody is is saying that synology media centre gives album cover art when you use naim (n-stream) to browse in folder mode. Nobody is disputing that you can get album cover art through other browsing tree option (as you have nicely shown!)
But this is a limitation of media centre not the naim app. Other streaming servers running on NAS can and do provide cover art in the naim (n-stream) app. Plex, running on Synology DSM does this; it grabs images from the web for you. Twonky, running on IOmega IX2-200 also does this; it uses folder.jpg images from the folder for you. The naim app displays the image sent by the server. Neither the native Synology media server, nor minim server, are doing this...and the naim app shows a generic folder icon as a result.
This is is how I interpreted the original question, anyway.

Hi Alan, OK maybe my misinterpretation but the OP does say he wants to get art & browse by folder view.
Agreed! Your observation is correct: no art in folder view from Synology Media Station. To get art in folder view, he needs a different server-side solution, not a different control app. It's not a naim issue, that's what I was saying. Folder art can be had with, eg, Twonky or Plex and the naim app will show it. But I, like you, prefer the native Synology and Minim solutions and choose a different browsing strategy (album, artist, date, artist/album, whatever) to get the best of both worlds. Violent agreement!
To those seeking art-filled fun browsing by folder, however, minim isn't your friend!
As an aside, I have the silliest possible folder structure for my flac rips: a master "flac music" folder, in which are filed one folder per album, each named with artist and disc title. I chose this for file system ease (eg for auto rsync backup when I add a new rip, I only have to watch one directory). I leave structured browsing to the metadata (tags) completely. It's logically and hierarchically distinct and puts all the browsing / tree creation and searching on the quality of the metadata and the server. Works for me.

Yes I want to be able to see folder.jpg when navigating by folder view. Other views seems to fine but I just prefer the folder based browsing approach.

Try Plex or Twonky and see if that floats your boat...folder view is a special case and you need a (server) solution that treats it the way you prefer.

How do you typically arrange your folders?
I ask because if on the one hand they are by Artist, then the Artist sort works, and displays art.
If you arrange them by something else . . . maybe genre . . . what picture do you want to see that represents the entire genre? etc. etc.
Obviously this is all personal preference.
I have installed minimserver on my ds213+. This server offers album art in folder view inside of an artist folder.
I have Synology 212j but Minimserver is not on the list of downloadable sw. How can I install it?

If you have kept your Synology DSM updated (its now 5.1 series) then the Minimserver & the also required Java program, is in your Synology Package Centre.
I have last update and do not see it there, can you post printscreen?
The package seems not to be available for all models yet. My DS213+ does not occur in the list:
https://www.synology.com/en-us...packages/MinimServer
But on most devices it can be installed manually instead.

Confirmed. Sorry I got that wrong earlier! Good one gert.

Thanks. My folder structure are of the following format:
<genre>/<artist>/<album1>... <albumN>
I find this approach easier from a navigation perspective. The problem I have is my metadata are not well sorted so if I browse by artist, album etc, I get loads of rubbish. :-)
Thanks for the ideals. It does looks like organising my metadata would be my number one priority!
